Oil and Filter Change
I have had the BMW break-in service for my 2013 M5 when it was shipped to the U.S. after ED and presume that oil and oil filter have been changed. Now the question is, when is the best time to go for the next Oil and filter change as I think having it at the next free scheduled service (after 12000 miles) is somewhat too long? Normally, I would go after every 3000 miles but my mechanic says that with synthetic oil, that could be stretched to every 7000 to 10000 miles. What do you guys think? Also, what sort of oil filter is recommended, does that have to be BMW oil filter or would a third party be fine? I am also thinking of using 0W-40 LL-01 either Castrol (European) or Mobil1.

Since the "Condition Based Service (CBS)" will only tell you to change it every 15,000 - 16,000 miles I suggest one intermediate change every 7,500 - 8,000 miles. That's what I'm doing anyway.

I will also have my dealer to perform an additional oil change in between the factory intervals this week or next week. I supply my own oil and filter and they will charge $52 plus tax. Not too bad imo.

So, I take it that no one is changing their own LOF service?

I just had the dealer perform an intermediate oil and filter change, about 6,000 miles since the 1,200 mile service (which the VDC and the dealer both did with about 1 mile on the car in between). I will be doing all my own intermediate changes in the future using 0W-30 Castrol Edge with SPT, European Formula, ACEA A3/B4 (approved by BMW). DON'T use ACEA A5/B5 oils, they are NOT approved for BMWs and many other cars and can cause engine damage.
FWIW, the oil specified for the car is 0W-40 with 5W-30 an acceptable substitute. There is a long list of other oils approved by BMW, the are many viscosities in the 0W-40 range and in between. In the U. S. the dealers/BMW use 5W-30 as that is what is specified for most other new BMWs; I suspect they do it as it would help with inventory management. |

I thought it's 0W30?

You had me worried there for a second as I just stocked up on a few bottles of 0W30

LOF
I will be the first, I guess. I will be using Lubri-Moly (German brand and authorized by all the big European performance brands) and it will be the 0-30W in the winter and 0-40W in the summer. Always has worked for me whether it's European or Domestic.

From a viscosity standpoint, a 0W-40 motor oil will have a higher viscosity at high temperatures than a 0W-30 oil, while having the same viscosity properties at low temperatures.
For 0W40 - Mobil 1 - probably easier to source out locally For 0W30 - German Castrol |

Sorry to ask but what is the difference if it will have higher viscosity? Especially since I drive my car pretty hard. And does it have to do that I added oil after 1400 miles.

Mobil 1 0-40 European Formula. Houston weather is pretty doggone hot. My car will never utilize anything else, but for the first 500 miles. I want that Castrol nastiness out...
