Is getting cc brakes a bad idea?

I realize this has probably been beat to death - but - other than cost - what are to downsides of ordering this option. Is brake squeal a problem?

It's really not as bad of a question as the age old debate: "to Bang & Olufsen or to not Bang & Olufsen, that is the question."

CCB's have their upsides and downsides. I would have gotten them if they offered them on the 2013's, solely for the fact that they don't make brake dust. That's worth every penny in my book. Still others say, only get them if you intend on tracking the M5 a lot, but in reality almost no-one tracks an M5 on a regular basis. The CCB's tend to squeal more, especially when cold, and they will cost you the price of your child's college fund when it's time to replace them, but they have a very long life, and your kid will probably already be out of college, when the time comes to replace the CCB's if you are just driving the M5 on the street its whole life. Yes, the dealer will charge you around $5,000 per rotor, labor included, to replace them. The stopping power when warmed up though and the lower unsprung mass is worth it in my opinion. They say every pound of unsprung mass dropped from a car is like adding 5hp.

Here is some math and science for you.

http://hpwizard.com/rotational-inertia.html

In short, if you can afford the CCB's, get them as they look pretty and will save you the headache of brake dust. Whether you take the car to the track or not, they are worth it in the end.

I had ccb on my 997 turbo and I loved them. Best brakes I've ever had. Yes they squeak, but heck my brakes on my m5 squeak more haha. You have to be very careful when going to a tire shop or doing work on your car. Those rotors are very fragile and chip super easy. I bought a wheel lug guide, so nobody would drop the rim on the rotor when taking the wheel off. I'm sure you'll sell the car long before you'll need to replace the rotors. I know I would haha!

MOST importantly, CCB's do NOT stop as well in normal street conditions. Be prepared to shit in your pants the first cold hard stop. They work much worse than steel when cold (and wet).
No brake dust is a god send but be prepared for overall worse performance on the street. I have ccb now and steel on my '13 and don't track the 30jahre so I have experience of both. I did track my '13 with steel.
Oh and my steel made more noise than my CCB's. Mine are quiet.

This is not necessarily true. I had my CCB replaced under warranty, as they was out of spec under 10k miles on them. The dealer called BMWUSA for permission to replace them and they was replaced.

Not worth it for daily use. The cold performance is scary. I tested a CCB M5 (cancelled special order) this year and it was scary - felt the brake was almost not there. Dealer had warned me before so I was going slow.

I don't think brake dust is that big of a problem. Just hose it off on weekends. Not a big deal.

What was "out of spec" ?
cuz my CCB pads do have weird craters.

I'm sure under special circumstances like yours and having to take it up to BMWNA for "permission", they would be covered. Manual says and official position is, it's not covered (unfortunately). I have them on a purchased car so am a bit worried.

I believe I have good relations with my dealership and the staff there, that could be why they did it.

Never hurts to have a good relationship with your dealer.

I disagree, brake dust is a monumental issue that doesn't just "hose off", even with opti-coated wheels. I changed to Carbotech pads...problem solved. They may not be as clean as CCBs, but I'd honestly say this killed 90%+ of the problem...

It's are not a problem for me. But if you are OCD about wheels, then just clean them often. I drive my car sparingly, so it's really not an issue

I prioritize safety over the minor annoyance of having to clean my wheels every couple of weeks. I recently switched out my summer wheels for winter. It took about 20 minutes a wheel to restore it back to original condition - now they are stored.

Any more thoughts on CCB's ? I've been offered a individual 2015 with comp. package with CCB's and 15k kms, but I am having second thoughts about the car for its CCB's.

Further it is an pristine M5 in a very unique color (Perodit Green).

I have them on recently delivered car

Took delivery on Friday - so I can't comment on long term issues. However, they look absolutely awesome and stop on a dime. I wouldn't let them deter you.
