I would actually like to see a poll asking how many people actually even know how to drive Manual transmission. I am guessing that its a shrinking demographic.

I'd replace 'fear of compromising the car' with 'respect for design intent', but otherwise 100%.

It'd be interesting to do another poll on what DID you order.

Hi guys, I just joined to get some info on the new M5. This will be my first BMW having only had Porches and Audis. I just visited 3 BMW dealership in the NYC metro area and was able to get my name on the list for the MY 2013 M5. Now I am waiting for options and hope to get some feedback in these forums as to what exactly to order.

I have experienced driving friends' M3's with DCT on long/short drives and just did not enjoy the experience -- found it really boring. To each his own and to say that anybody has a manhood complex just because of this is rather telling of the person insinuating such. Again, it is "involvement in driving" experience that most manual enthusiasts are craving and not because they have a manhood complex.

True but and 2 ton M5 won't exactly give you that driving experience you are looking for. We are just saying the DCT is the way to go in an M5 F10... in the M3 I'd probably get the manual because it is more fun indeed... but not in a 2 ton saloon.

No matter how fast DCT shifts, I want my car to shift when I WANT.
I am not sure if you have ever driven a SMG or DCT, but I have to tell you, you can still decide when YOU want to shift. Just like in race cars (which are mostly equipped with sequential gearboxes).

Oh man I can feel you... the SMGs were the best. DCT is so boring. You don't feel the shifts anymore, while in the SMG BAAAMMM you feel every shift in your neck. Guess I have to save even more money to buy an Aventador or a 599 GTO to get the good "old style" sequencial gearbox.

Yeah...thnx for correcting.
But there s not much fun with those electronic shifts.
That sound of the stick...the feeling of control.

If I was going to buy an M5, it would be with the DCT. I used to be a 6MT purist, but then my back started giving me problems and I figured out that the left foot was causing part of it. The DCT on the 335is is really nice. I'm sure the DCT in the M5 is better. There are days when I'd love to row through the gears, but the DCT meets my thrill needs 99% of the time.

although I love my 6MT on the M3, I think I'll convert over the DCT on my next M car. It's just so much easier to drive and I can drive and eat a hamburger at the same time.

Of course, that can only be decided once you have some seat time with it.

My comment related to your exchange with jk3355:

I was pointing out that it was developed from scratch well prior to the launch of the M5 itself, hence very different than the case of the E60.

The NA M Brand Manager confirmed above that the 6MT and DCT were developed/tested in parallel for the F10 M5.

Really? I liked mine and had no issues. Not sure where the S word comes from.

Also, to those who say it hurt resale, it was the exact opposite. When I dropped my 08 off after lease, the dealer immediately bought it from BMW put it on the lot ($66K asking price) and sold it in a week. Said he wanted it because the manuals were hard to find and people wanted them (I'm sure it did not hurt that my car had only 17K on the clock and was in perfect condition).

In the end, I would not have leased the M5 if it didn't come with a 6-speed manual. So by offering this option, BMW upped their sale count by one.

I left BMW after my e46 SMG M3 - went with a Range and C63 so Im unfamiliar with DCT. What makes it boring in comparison to SMG?

SMG was definitley rough around the edges, but I loved that about it. Program 6 with DSC off really did whack u in the back on upshifts - Oh and the throttle blip!

It just never fealt like the gearbox and S85 we paired well together. Even drove a friend's M6 with that combo and was not a fan.

So what would you go with? 6Mt or flappy for a car that will never see a track, but driven quite spiritedly on hill country back roads.

Also, the DD is already a 6MT, so that is not an issue.

I plan on ordering the vehicle middle of next year an going 6MT.

I want to thank BMW for giving us the consumer the choice to pick what we want on a $100k vehicle.

I also would advise them that if they already develop the 6MT for this vehicle why not let those in Europe and Asia decide what they want on this beauty. I am sure many will go with the 6MT if given the option.
