A 40k car is a bad idea. Even if you're proper rich.

An old golf would do the trick.

Might as well get her a 760Li. Good car to learn on. You won't feel it when you hit anything.

A BMW with the smallest engine possible (no sexist)

One only really learns how to drive in the first few years after obtaining a license/permit.

Until she turns 20, it's best to keep the budget down.

Is there a 216?

Powerful car being driven by a woman, it can be dangerous. She pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

First time driver here*

I got an AW/ coral red X1 x28i M-Sport as a first car and I rather like it. Its less common than the slew of 3 series that you see on a daily basis and isn't nearly as serious (at least in white/ red) as all of the grey/ silver sedans you see around. The attitude/ presence of the car is more fitting of a younger driver than a 328i. The power is 'adequate' and doesn't let you get into /too/ much trouble.

Not really sure what to get her. She likes the 2-series, but I am pushing her towards a CPO 328i for around $35k.

The X3 is also another option I'm considering. Any others I should be looking at? The budget is around $40k.
This is incredibly dumb. You want a 15 year old to start off on a BMW? What is she going to look forward to in her life for next steps if you start her this high? There is no reason that a 15 year old should be driving around something that nice. It should be a safe beater car that they can learn on.

Don't spoil them - be wise

Do not get a 15 year old a convert. An inexperienced driver is very liable to roll over accidents and is not a good idea with a vert

My first car was a 1990 Volvo 760 Turbo. Started driving it in '99 and drove until after college in '06. It had like 100 HP .

My suggestion is to start with a safe underpowered car (BMW 328? To answer OPs question) Like others have said, you start too high what else is there to look forward to? Also too much power can be dangerous for a new driver. Im sure I'll do the same once I have kids.

I grew up in an upper middle class area in the Houston Suburbs. Wasn't uncommon to see BMW's, Corvettes, etc in the High School Parking Lot. In fact those two teens that were racing Corvettes and crashed a few years ago was in my hometown (The Woodlands).

OT but friends and acquaintances made fun of the Volvo a lot through high school and college. I didnt care much because I was thinking more long term. Nowadays it's a different story.

I'd get them a used 5 series or something. Nothing too crazy plus it'd be safer than a 3.

E36 M3. The single best handling car I've ever owned. Bonus points if you can find a convertible.

I took the bus to school. In college (2000) when I had to go to my internship, my dad bought me a 1987 Honda Accord. Definitely not the coolest car or anything but it was a lot of fun - it was freedom. Still my favorite car to this date.

But these experiences build character and teach you to look forward and strive to do better in life. Start them off high and you make them feel entitled and not much to look forward to.
