Lol I still remember all the hate for this motor before anything was released. Now look at the love!!!
Either way great motor. But now my engine is outdated on the x5m compared to this, sort of.
Test drive time soon!

Agree 100%.....

This thing is highly underrated (or detuned)...

+5psi boost & +.7 compression = A LOT more than 5HP!!

Anyone else notice this in paragraph 4;
"560 hp (US preliminary figure)"

Having owned a V10 M5 and driven an X5M I think this new engine will amaze a lot of people.

I'm sure this is great and all, and incredibly clever, but the NA M engines are true things of beauty.

I don't understand why BMW would underrate this engine. IMO that only made sense in the N54 considering some of the times that it made (0-60 etc. etc. stuff that an average consumer would base their opinion off of i.e. not suspension, high revving v8 etc. etc. so please don't start this war) because it had to make sure the M3's times all around were better (see Boxster, vs Cayman, vs 911 discussions).

The M5 has no upper vehicle to make sure it does not out perform. Why underrate? From a marketing/sales perspective it makes no sense. This car will need some marketing/sales push so this doesn't make any sense to me.

Also, I am still not sure about this bar $hit but if the stock motor is pushing 22 psi like people have said then how does this thing not have turbo lag? Will tuners be pushing 30+ psi? Doesn't that seem ridiculous?

Definitely agreed with the underrating of this engine... 22psi! That's insane on a stock motor...

Maximum HP doesn't describe the power curve. My suspicion is that the extra pressure is used to power the engine after max torque, ie maintaining power after the peak torque - probably giving an engine with less "cliff" drop compare to other turbo engines.

Same thing with the BMW S1000RR, a Lot of them have around 5-10HP more. (In contrast to the japanese Kilobikes which usually have 5-15HP less then on the paper.)

22psi is about medium boost... Evos and subbies come stock running a tad over 20psi. I was making a bit over 400 whp @ 20 psi on my eclipse gsx on a 2.0 liter engine. 22psi on a 4.4 liter and making only 500 seems a bit low to me but i guess its has a really safe factory tune

chances are the boost pressure is actually absolute boost pressure ie 1.5 bar - 1 bar = .5 bar which is around 8 psi which makes sense. Its highly unlikely that they will release a car with 10:1 CR and run 18 or 22 psi. . If you log parameters in any of the turbo powered DMEs you will see they actually measure absolute pressure and derive boost pressure from there. the reason is to account for altitude.
