As far as I can tell they're not forged.
The german brochure doesn't mention it anyway:

343 M style => "geschmiedet" (= forged)
601 M style => "glanzgedreht" (= high gloss / polished)

Do you have weights?

I so agree... Does not make sense for them not to be forged, especially on a comp package car.

That would not make sense for them not to be forged... After all, it is a comp package....

Agree it would not make sense. But BMW is usually quite specific about their terminology.

Would be interesting to see the weights.

Agreed.... Makes me want to order the 343 wheels on my 2014 LCI comp package.

Maybe you should email BMW and find out the weights? If 601M is as light as 343M wheels it should be forged. If it is 5+ lbs heavier than it is likely cast.

Do not get cast wheels on an m5. They will lose balance too quickly and you will get steering wheel vibration.

Most likely they are forged, but always good to be certain. BMW sometimes does odd things.

Thanks so much... Really appreciate your input... On a side note...

What are your thoughts about running down pipes w/ the OEM exhaust? Or perhaps also doing a muffler delete w/ the axle back system that Turner sells?

And how do you feel about Carbon brakes for a M5 that's only driven on the street? My guess is that one could not even tell the difference since carbon brakes need lots of heat to work well.

Regarding the down pipes, hard to say because I haven't seen a car with them. A couple of the guys in our local chapter have them now so I can answer in 2 weeks time. My main hesitations would be (I) warranty, (II) noisy rattle sound from Wastegate, and (iii) cel error.

Muffler delete is probably a good idea. Car is too quiet as is. Best to do muffler delete plus straight pipes.

On the carbon brakes - I like them. The discs are an inch bigger. I haven't measured if that means more braking power but it might be. Need to check the numbers. They are also quieter and cleaner. Squealing is an issue with the standard brakes - some threads on this here. That said, we don't have issues wth brake fade on the streets, so value is not as big as it would be for a track user. In Texas on the f1 track CCB were clearly better, but I don't know if the steel brakes were brand new like the CCBs. Rotor condition and pads come into consideration too. FYI I didn't buy CCB.

If CCBs were 3-4k, it would be a no brainer. They are epic and very noticeable on the street if you drive and brake hard 8-10/10. At ~9k it's a bit of a stretch, but then Akra wants 7-8k for an exhaust that's 15% louder than stock. If I were ordering a LCI, I'd go for the CCBs

Thanks for the reply and input. Now sure what you mean by 8-10/10. Can you clarify?

One thing I can tell you having had the M5 for more than a year. If I could do just one performance upgrade it would be brakes. The car is so fast that your biggest risk is not being able to slow down fast enough.

it's a colloquial measure of how hard you are driving the car. 10/10 means as hard as possible, like on a track. full throttle or full braking. nothing in between.

Agree 100% Rob...if you are on the brakes HARD regularly, the performance is amazing.

10/10 = max braking
8/10 = 80% max braking

Cheers,

This thread seems to have wandered from the original question - it can't be that hard to get an authoritative answer to this q... Anyone?

I agree... I just had my BMW sales rep at Crevier check w/ his parts dept. & he's indicating that the the 343 wheel is 2lbs. lighter than the 601 wheel. Seems crazy that a comp package wheel would be heavier.... Thoughts anyone?
