Thx. You recommend the 1 piece carbon driveshaft, or keep the stock style one?

Sounds about right - need to send cores for the axles

I spent a bit of time with Steve Dinan today, discussing the project and racing engines in general. The knowledge this man has is incredible over his 40 years in racing and while engine management has evolved, the internal combustion engine essentially remains the same.

I can't get into finer details, but here are all the items that are engineered into a race engine build:

1. Piston material, valve recess, compression
2. Piston coating
3. Pin position, oiling
4. Piston ring design, clearance
5. Rod sizing, stroke, angle at TDC
6. Crank preparation
7. Cylinder wall prep (going non-sleeved vs. sleeved)
8. The assembly process
9. Oiling, crankcase pressure
10. Fueling

Literally there are like 15-20 things to consider for each of the above in order to optimize. Lucky to have someone knowledgeable to share ideas and whose experience I can leverage.

You get a cost on the axles? Trying to decide if I want to do them now.

DSS charges around $1200 + cores. You need to shop around for cores. There may be folks selling them on the forum as they upgrade.

I will have a set available, but not for a few months.

I was told for drag like starts cf driveshafts over time can snap. Is that a concern? This was for a 335i big hp application.

Possibly - at very high HP levels. But at least they shatter..

quick hitting Torque at low end same thing that kills GTR stock rods above 650wtrq if it comes on too hard.

Shouldn't be disconcerting when it takes turbos / race gas/meth + aggressive tune to get to that point, and you've added nearly 150-200+wtrq to a stock motor.

The thing I learned from GTR days, no matter what is reenforced, power always finds and breaks the weakest link, the good news for the rest of the guys is you are basically showing them what will go at each step of the process... While the GTR had tons and tons of owners pushing R*D seems to be just you paving the way forward for these guys to learn what to do and not to do. They should be very grateful.

When my GTR only had an 800 level turbo kit on it, I ate a driveshaft component due to the shock from repeated low end hits on R888 tires and what a shock those hard sidewalls are to the drivetrain.

We decided on a slightly oversized bore but stock stroke. Various other geometries of the rotating assembly have been modified (car will need tuning to take advantage of these changes). Pistons are lighter and rods are about the same - will have data on the weights and balances once we have it assembled. It will be balanced to within 0.25g (stock BMW M engines are 1.5-2.5g).

So is Dinan going to offer these to more owners or are you and an unnamed enthusiast the only ones?

Available to one and all! The specific config can vary depending on how streetable you want it to be.

The tech who assembles the motor does LeMans engines so it's not like someone experimenting...

Baseline price from Steve DINAN Sdtech is $19,999 that does not include the labor to install in car nor does it include the block or timing chains so you have to supply a useable block
they charge about $6k for labor

Good luck I can't wait to go for a ride

So, Steve is charging 20k for the built short block? Just want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly.

26k installed.

Yes that's retail for R&R on a customer supplied long block assembly. Includes the hardware. Install and OEM gaskets etc are more. $20K means you supply all gaskets, timing chains, guides and whatever OEM part that needs replacing.
