Welt - BMW On Demand - Which M?
2015 M ED Ordered - I am so stoked to be picking up a 2015 M5 (Singapore Grey - Exec - Black Full Merino - 343M Polished) on Nov 20th in Munich. Thank you board members for the encouragement to order w/ Full Merino!
The Trip - ...will be quick. Only two days in Munich, followed by three days of exploring Dublin on my way back to Seattle. I'm disappointed that I didn't take advantage of ED during the summer months w/ my wife and son - next time! In the meantime, the wife has extended me a hall pass to fly to Europe solo to take delivery of the M5 and do some sightseeing. Note: There is some German law requiring winter tires after Oct 27th so I will not be driving the M5 off the Welt - 75 Euros and BMW will ship the beast home from the Welt for me - hoping this means it will arrive sooner BMW "M" On Demand - I found out through my Seattle BMW CA that the BMW Welt offers BMW rental cars - including rentals on the M3, M4, M5, M6 and M6GC among other cars (Thanks for the G2 Karl Enemark!). At 75 Euros per hour, I plan to rent something for 2-3 hours w/ the plan to see some local sights AND see how fast I can go on the Autobahn Would love some feedback from the board members:

Congratulations on your new car. I've never done ED, but would really like to. Looking forward to your impressions when you get back.

Any of the M's would be great.
M3 and M4 are cheaper at 50-55 euro but I'm sure price isn't an issue. I would take M6 over M5 just to drive something else but that's just me. With only a few hours and be able to get to high speed on the Autobahn, I would go south on 95 and loop back up on 2 and stop by to Andechs monastery for a beer before heading back to the Welt. Just don't drink too much http://www.andechs.de/en/the-monastery-brewery.html In my experience it does take 20-30 minutes after leaving Welt and going through some local traffic before reaching somewhere that you can go legally above 80mph. And this is not during rush hour. So almost one hour of the three should be planned to get out and back into city center. Any other direction out of Munich on the Autobahn you would have much higher chance of hitting traffic or at least more cars on the Autobahn therefore limiting your top speed. I was able to hit 150 mph going both southbound on 95 (and return) on various times. I found going east bound from Munich towards Austria (and return) to be very likely to be congested. In a recent issue of Motor Trend, they tried to hit top speed on a S-class and I think they took route 95 too. |

I'd get an M3 or M4 and take it directly to the Ring. Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars and do 155mph on the Autobahn on the way to the Ring. Just make sure it's not snowing on the Ring first, although I think it'll be safe in November.

On a separate note, for 2 days I would rent from hertz at the airport instead. It's cheaper, it nets out the cost of cab to and from the airport, and Hertz has many very nice cars too including BMWs. Last time I booked a 5 series and they upgraded me to an S class free of charge. They also had a Jag XF 3.0 Supercharged with AWD, several CLS350 CDIs, Porsches, Audi S models.

In that case just follow Stealth's advice and rent something from the airport. 3 hours is too short a time to really do anything. Maybe go on the Autobahn for a quick dash.

I went to the M school in SC a couple years ago and drove all three cars back to back. The way they set it up the track it was tight. One relatively long straightaway and one high speed corner., but the rest was tight The E92 M3 was the fastest and most fun to drive out of the three there. The M5 and M6 were more fun (i.e. fast) on the straightaway and high speed corner. If you only have 2-3 hours and are going for the autobahn, I'd get either the M5 or M6.

COMPLETELy agree. Don't pick up tickets thinking all of the autobahns are speed delimited. I picked up over $800 worth speeding tickets in a couple of hours driving from FRA to MUN. I was too happy with my 911 rental to notice that most sections has a speed limit. If it's a rental, they will send you the ticket to US and charge your credit card.
