6MT - rev matching not working

Hello All,

First post here on M5Post as I just picked up a lightly used 2013 M5 about a month ago from a forum member here. Coming from mostly Audis (A4, S4, RS4), this is my second BMW (first was '06 330i) and it has been a blast!

I've been reading through the manual and on the forums to find out as much as I can about what settings do what and when/under what conditions. Based on that, I seem to have an issue with the rev-matching. I understand that it only works in Comfort and Sport mode (not Sport Plus). I typically drive in Sport and the rev matching seems to work 75% of the time, which is really annoying because I always have to be ready to step in and match RPMs if the rev matching decides not to work.

Has anyone else had this issue? I've done a Google search and the closest I could come up with was one other person who seemed to have a "shift sensor" problem, but in that case it also did not give him a gear shift indication and the back-up camera did not come on automatically when he put it in reverse.

Thanks in advance!

I only drive my car in sport plus but have noticed the opposite issue. Every once in a while in Sport Plus, it rev matches. Go figure. I would let you're dealer know the next time you bring it in.

I've only had mine for a week (live in Sport Plus) and have noticed the same thing.

How much of a delay between shifts? I find that after a certain duration of time it does not rev match but if it's an immediate shift it should match...

Never had Rev matching in Sport Plus. Wonder if this can be coded in?

I've been trying to figure out if/how this may affect whether it rev matches or not - hard to tell as there does not seem to be a consistent pattern.

Hi Mark.. its me Joe, hope all is well bud. Glad you are enjoying the car, was really sweet to see it again, a collector for sure. I remember the rev matching working about 80% of the time and it was usually due to a few things - more around the form/timing of your clutch engagement and actual gear shift. First off timing is everything (close to perfect) for the matching to happen while also ensuring the clutch is FULLY disengaged and reengaged (all the way down) - yes I know a high travel for it work consistently.

I remember having to almost walk the car through exactly what I wanted to do: Clutch full compress, sold shift, full disengage - repeat. Hope this helps and yes it does not work in Sport Plus and I found that utterly annoying as that is most spirited mode the engine can be in.

Hey Joe, thanks for chiming in! Loving the car - and I can't believe the power in it, just blows me away! Hope you're enjoying that new "hatchback" of yours LOL

Thanks for the insight on the rev matching...I was wondering if it was just very particular in the what/how the shifting was done for it to engage. I'll have to pay closer attention to the sequence and see if I can make it 100% consistent...or just spend all my time in Sport Plus!

I've never really figured out why BMW chooses to rev match in comfort and sport but not sport+. You would figure that when at the track when downshifting is most critical that the car would rev match with most sensitive throttle, but it's the opposite. I prefer the way Porsche does it with rev match only in sport+, and disabled in normal mode.

Downshifting into a lower gear should automatically rev match as soon as you put the gear into the gate... in fact it should blip multiple times for example going from 6th to 4th, then taking it out of 4th and into 3rd without letting the clutch out. However, if you take the gear out and place it into neutral for a certain period of time it will not rev match.

If it is not auto blipping immediately out of the gear and into a lower gear, there is an issue.

Their stated reason is that they believe folks who want to drive in Sport+ will want to heel toe shift themselves. Seems to me the better answer is to have it optional in all modes.

Actually I would prefer not to have it all, but I can see having it in the "comfort" modes. I would not like to have it during track days or "spirited" driving in the twisties. There's already too much interference from the electronics in my opinion that I think it makes unskilled drivers safer and better drivers slower. Rev matching isn't difficult, but it is a learned skill. I was taught how to do it a long time ago and don't want to unlearn it and learn what the "brain" of the car wants me to do. When you're on a track, shifting, rev matching, braking is instinctual and I don't want to be distracted by having to think about the length of clutch throw to allow auto-rev matching. Just my 2 cents.

Rev matching should be an option in your M Button Setup. It should not be tied to drive mode. I would far prefer to turn it off for all modes...

I wish I could turn it off on my car altogether.
