Going to the track tomorrow

Has anyone been to the track, I need some pointers on how to launch. I would like to know peoples opinion on whether or not I should use LC or not or just mash the throttle and modulate it? What settings should I use, should I change the suspension to comfort or leave it in sport or sport plus?

Try changing to comfort and launch it from 2,000-3500 RPMs. Let us know how your launches go.

Why comfort? Is that how you use launch control?

I don't even have my M5 yet, but I'd guess the comfort mode would allow better weight transfer to the rear tires on launch. And keeping the revs low might help the tires keep some sort of traction, leaving it up to the driver to pedal it through the first two, or maybe even three, gears. I'd really be interested to see what kind of 1/4 mile times could be had with slicks, and to see if the drive train could survive many hard launches over the course of one day. Is anyone seriously drag racing the M5? Certainly not its primary function, but I'd think there's potential there.

Thats correct, I launched last night and had a much more successful launch in comfort compared to Sport plus. I did have some wheel spin since I launched from 3k. 2k should probably be better.

So I only did 3 runs which wasnt a lot...a lot of cars were breaking down and I had a bad feeling. I was getting a lot of wheel hop and didnt want to potentially break something so I stopped after 3 runs. My best run was a 12.2 at 120mph...my 60 foot was 2.1 which is relatively bad. My friend in his tuned CLS55 was getting consistent 1.8 and ran a 12.1. If I could somehow get a 1.8 60 foot this is definitely an 11 second car. The car is fast.

Thanks for your report. The launch is so critical to the ET and I understand your reluctance to abuse your new car. I wonder if there is a way to improve the launch characteristics of the M5 without compromising its handling on a twisty road? Probably not compatible rear suspension configurations. What sort of MPH was your friend turning?

3 runs?? I wondered why I kept passing your car, parked, as I passed through the pits between runs. Your car is really sharp, like I said.

I prolly ran 20 times or more - but my passes weren't nearly as fast as yours. Best was 12.6, which I was pretty happy with...

Enjoy your car!

quattro makes it easy, man - just mash the gas and hold on!

Plan to head back out there again? I'm toying with going again Saturday, just looking for some better conditions... 1300' Density Altitude wasn't doing us any favors....
