Renderings and Rumors: 2017 BMW 5 Series to Receive 3 Cylinder and M5 Over 600 HP
BIMMERPOST NEWS Renderings and Rumors: 2017 BMW 5 Series to Receive 3 Cylinder and M5 Over 600 HP Autobild is reporting that the next generation 2017 BMW 5 Series will add a 3 cylinder turbodiesel model in certain markets. The 3 cylinder turbodiesel 5 Series is rumored to output 150 HP (110 kW) and sip diesel at just 3.9 liters / 100 km (60 MPG US / 72 MPG UK). The next gen 5 Series will ride on a new platform which it will share with the next gen 6 Series and 7 Series. The report goes on to predict that the next M5 model will feature power in excess of 600 HP and will be offered with optional all-wheel-drive (as previously reported). The next gen 5 Series is expected to hit the market in mid 2016. The touring model prototype has already been spied in testing (spy pics). Speculative/imaginative renderings by Autobild: |

M5 based on 7 platform. I didn't think these cars could get much bigger. I was wrong. |

Looks excellent. Clear evolution of current design. Very BMW like.

Here's my next generation M5 wish list (cause I'm bored ):
- Do not make the chassis bigger - Under 4,000lbs due to the use of lighter aluminum and CFRP. - The next engine will probably still be turbo charged. I have almost no idea where they can go from here with ///M engines. Quad turbo Inline 6 maybe? I hope not, but I just hope that it redlines higher than the S55 engine. I also hope that ///M will take the time to create a bespoke ///M engine, no matter if it is turbo charged or not. - Use of KERS system - Use of Active Aerodynamics - 10 speed DCT - Carbon Fiber Roof Option - Optional AWD for those who want to beat Mercedes and Audi at their own game. - Better more direct feeling steering system (we'll see how good the EPS is in the M4 though). That's all I can think of for now.

I don't really like it to much right now I would still prefer the current LCI 5 series over the "rumor" but if the new M5 is 400lbs lighter and 600+ HP then that may be game......we will see.

Contradicts the weight saving measures, same with KERS, as to provide noticeable boost in a road car, the batteries will need to big quite large Agree that adopting i car tech (carbon fibre + lighter hybrid materials) is the next logical move. Last edited by Dionysus; 11-01-2013 at 05:07 AM.. |

Which means that even though some tech is shared in the platform, there will obviously be room for differences as a 3-series can't have the same size as a 7-series. |

Also with the advancements that are being made in battery technology, such as with Tesla's batteries and the further development with them from BMW i, batteries will become lighter, hold more charge, and will be able to power 2 50hp motors to the rear wheels for a 20-30 second boost of horsepower, without adding too much weight. The power required to power the motors for an extra 20 seconds or so can't be that much, and may only require a short time to charge them back up from the things like regenerative braking systems.

If it is another Twin Turbo V8, I hope they make it have a higher redline and more effieciency. Not that I care about efficiency, but's the direction I know they are heading anyways. Claiming 30% more fuel efficient than the old S85 V10 was easy, because that old V10 was so horrible at gas consumption. Making the another engine TT V8 that is 30% more fuel efficient than the S63tu, will be a feat of engineering I say.

The 740i (i.e. I'm not even talking about the longer 740iL) has a wheelbase of 120.9". The M5 has a wheelbase of 116.7". Not to mention the 740i's overall length exceeds that of the M5 by some 6.3". |
