Brakes Whistling

Has anyone had issues with the brakes "whistling" as the car comes to a stop?? It seems to happen at @15mph until I stop. Its not loud but its definitely easy to hear...

Yes, experiencing the same thing. There's a "Squeaky Break" thread in the Wheels forum - the key thing to try is rebedding the brake pads. Make a couple hard decelerations from 60 to 80 mph, then cruise a bit without touching the brakes to allow the pads and rotors to cool a bit.

I've had this issue for the last month. Took it to the dealer last week. They said they fixed it, but still has the same problem. I just dropped it off for another service. Hopefully they figure this out. My last M5 and M6 and my wife's X5m have no issues. Sounds like its a major flaw with the F10, M5

This is NOT a major flaw. Previous versions of the M5 have in fact had crappy brakes; good for one high speed stop, but lousy for repeated, heavy braking, such as being on a road course. The F10 M5 is the first M5 with the floating rotor design along with decent sized rotors and calipers; we should all be very grateful that finally the car is equipped with decent 'stoppers'. However, decent brakes are 'noisier'; it's unavoidable. But it's a trade-off that is absolutely worth the increased braking performance.
Regardless, try the following to minimise the 'squeal' when coming to a complete stop:
bed the brakes in properly after about 300-400 miles;
if not using the brakes 'hard', use the occasional rapid stop method from 80 mph down to 5 mph as above. Do NOT come to a complete stop and allow the brakes to cool for a few minutes between stops;
keep the wheels clean from brake dust as much as possible;
have this type of product, [Permatex 24125 Ceramic Extreme Brake Parts Lubricant], placed on the back of the pads if all else fails;
learn to live with it; recognise it as a sign of the excellent brakes your car has.

I have had the issue for the last 3 weeks or so but getting worse by the day. The squealing is very loud and almost EVERYTIME I slow down to 15 miles or less. No amount of hard braking runs seems to clear up problem for more than even 1 day. Brought the car to service yesterday and thankfully they test drove and heard squeal. They say its coming from one or both of front brakes. They inspected brakes and found nothing obvious. They have a call into regional tech guru for advise on next step.No response yet. Meantime I took M5 home (squealing at every slow down). I am embarrassed to stop at traffic lights, no kidding. While I feel the car is wonderful so far in all other respects this is a problem that has to get fixed. It is a daily annoyance/embarrassment and I will not put up with it. BMW HOPEFULLY YOU ARE MONITORING WEBSITE TODAY. There needs to be a service bulletin put out on this so service techs aren't scratching their heads and wondering what to do .This is obviously not a one off problem . Jason, please do not move this thread to the obscurity of Wheel,Tires , Suspension, Brakes forum. Lets give this issue some real "air" time to be vetted.

My brakes don't squeek at all. Then again I drive the car hard every weekend almost. You guys need to drive your M5's harder! LOL!

You also live in sunny San Diego where the warmer weather may be a factor (?).

I have the same frustration. When I have business associates, it's embarrassing to stop. I had an e39 M5, 2 e60 M5's, new X5M and no issues. My GT2 and F430 Scuderia has never had an issue like this. The dealer has my car for the 2nd time trying to fix it. The car is incredible, but un-drivable and embarrassing if they can't fix the brakes for me.

I just started experiencing the same loud squeal under light breaking in the last two weeks as well (car has 4100 miles so this is something new). I agree it's downright embarrassing that's how loud it is. I'm convinced extreme cold is a contributing factor to the noise. I live in the Northeast and we haven't experienced sub-freezing days until about 2 weeks ago. In addition, my car is garage kept and I don't get the squeal when first taking it out. After a day at work sitting in 20 degree weather that thing squeals the whole way home. A co-worker of mine has an F10 M5 as well and we spoke this morning. Same thing for him. We expect 50 degrees here sometime next week and I'm going to pay close attention for the squeal. Assuming it's gone I'm going to conclude that this is the primary factor in causing the squeal. Not sure there is going to be a fix for this.

Yup, same problem. Just started happening this week when temps really dropped here in Boston. Assuming it will go away.

Mine have been ordered and waiting for call from service department. Hope it works because I am fed up with this. I am literally trying not to apply brake in a smooth steady application of pressure and rather I am applying heavy foot and letting M5 roll to avoid noise. Know it's stupid but that is how I am trying to avoid the squeal.

Tried the hard braking thing and it seemed to work temporarily(a few days), but the squeek/whistle is back...Kona Jack did you make a stink and request new setup or did they just do it??

Ditto for me; seems to only happen when temps are near freezing and below. Doesn't happen all the time. First occurred after driving ~100 highway miles in 10 deg F cold air. Getting off the freeway and touching the brakes for the first time they started making noise at about 15 mph. Doesn't happen when taking he car out of the garage for the morning commute to the office.

The head tech at my dealer drove the car and agreed it was terrible. They first cleaned the pads, but problem persisted. Took it back a second time and they replaced the pads. Still had the same problem. They then ordered in new rotors. They drove it and said it was fixed. I have driven it about 20 miles since and so far it's fine. Hopefully the new pads and rotors fixes the issue.

You can add me to the list. It started to whine a little around 4k miles and now at almost 6k it was real bad the other day. I hear the cold and such but I drove a pretty good distance and they should have been warmed up but were squealing from like 30mph to stop. I need to do more tests to see if it happens more after being wet or what. My vehicle is also one of the oil guzzlers...
