This is what I am trying to get clarification on. All the pictures I've seen show a big bulky OBD cable for flashing the ECU over OBD. It does not look like a standard ENET cable. Can anyone chime in on that?

Maybe it's not an ENET cable

But with bootmod3 I can load tunes via an ENET cable so I figured everyone else could, too.

I think the cables have additional hardware inside. Will need to wait for someone to open one

The cable from VF Engineering is roughly $250 I believe
I feel that all OBD - Ethernet cables are the same.
I find it hard to believe that each tuner modifies the cables for their own needs. But, If I was a tuner I would only offer support with the cable that I sell. So that if there ever was a download file issue or whatever...the cable cant be blamed. Something like that ...

For our end user solution, all you need is enet cable. Yes a 25$ cable is more then enough to flash. All of the encryption, checksum calculations and access protocols are performed on our server so you dont need to spend money on un-necessary cables.

All the US tuners broke the news around the same time because they appear to all be using a white labeled version of frieling-racing's iFlash tool. i could be wrong, don't hold me to that. however all screenshots and images resemble FR's tool.

Again, how you read/write to the vehicle is the really big news here. don't confuse this security breakthrough with discussion on what tune is better.

what tune/re-remap you put on your vehicle is up you. bpm, vf, bootmod3..pick the tune with the gains and features you like. but at least now you don't need to pull the dme and take on all the risk that comes with that

This is huge! Have you OBD flashed a 2011 F10 535i?

I am unable to have BM3 installed due to my vehicle firmware/software being too difficult to update due to potential issues with modules being damaged. Would this be an issue with the OBD Mission flash?

That is true, aside from our us every other company uses Frieling tool for flashing. You can see that just by looking at the end user cables they provide. Every cable is a CANbus based usb tool with hardware based encryption on the chip. We don't use that because we believe that our customers shouldn't be paying $150+ for a "special" cable just because our supplier charges us that price for it.
Instead, we use our own (in house designed) tool for flashing. For that, all you need is a basic eNet cable and windows laptop. No need to buy any special cables or anything.

Yep we can tune that vehicle no problem. Already did few of them in the past, though yes they are a bit harder to tune.

Why is an ethernet cable involved at all? From what I understand, the BMW DME exposes some type of command (obviously masked behind levels of security + encryption + whatever) that allows you to read + write from the EEPROM of the ECU/DME.

It'd be a pretty big blow to all tuner shops out there if those OBD-II commands got leaked in my eyes. I'm trying to understand why more than
a $20 OBD-II -> USB tool is needed.
