I just got back from driving the x6M on the high speed track at the performance center and also drove the x6M on the track there as well and that car is crazy scary fast I can't imagine what the M5 is going to feel like

I am hoping BMW is reserving something more distinctive for the M6 if not M6 Grand Coupe.

For people who thinks these numbers are uber impressive look what the relatively modest 1M did in the hands of Auto Zeitung:

Base Price in Germany at the time (May 2011) of test: 50,500 EUR

Test weight was 1522kg (factory:1495kg);

0-100km/h: 4.5 sec.
0-160km/h: 9.8 sec.
0-200km/h: 16,3 sec.

Braking 100-0 km/h cold/warm: 35.2 m/33.7m.

Slalom 18m: 68.1 km/h

Auto Zeitung lap time: 1:39.4 s.

Nothing really "wrong" with the M5 just imo with that price tag, heavy technical artillery and all the power on tap, I would expect it doing better than that. I really believe that "better" is intentionally reserved for the Gran Coupe
Big difference here is the 0-200 km/h times

1M = 16.3 sec
M5 = 11.7 sec

also I think the 0-60 of 4.2 was a little slow (or the 4.5 seconds of the 1M test was really fast for that magazine's normal testing), Car and Driver tested the 1M at 4.5 and the M5 at 3.7, pretty huge difference.

As a side note, this car is going to burn some serious rubber! moving a car that heavy that quickly is going to be hell on the tires! especially with that much torque, I know this first hand from my C63 tires, if you want the best gripping tires, I doubt they will last more than 10,000 miles on the M5, all depends on your driving style though.

Can't agree with you on that. They built an new CCM, redesigned everything to accept Valvetronic, increased the compression, made changes the head, also chaged the oiling, Not to mention increased the redline to E39 Naturally aspirated highs. They also got rid of the need for cylinder deactivation during shifts and a whole bunch more.... they increased efficiency by over 25% while increasing performance, in two years that is a boat load- just adding an all new Valvetronic system they did a lot just in the engine. The rest of the car has a tweaked DCT, new diff, new rear suspension system (a la M3 GTS) and all the other tweaks to a big old sedan- that is impressive to me and then when you drive it it is a whole different animal, it is amazing.

Depends on the driving style but the Michelin Pilot Super Sports it wears are a M5 specific compound and lay-up. They should go for 15-20k up front and 10-15k out back if I was a betting man!!!

That time difference between the m5 and 1m really puts into perspective just how fast the 11.7 0-120mph is

Pilot Super Sports last a surprisingly long time, my 135i (wtih JB4) eats rubber like it's a bodily function. My stock rear runflats were bald and needed replacing after 7,000 miles. I replaced those with a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sports and those were also gone after 7-10,000 miles (including one track day, I recommend these tires especially considering their relatively moderate price. They're great on the street but awful for track use).

I've had my PSSs for at least 7,000 miles and they still look almost new. Part of this is because they are so much more grippy (my car would roast the tires in 2nd gear with either of the other two, but the super sports hook up in 2nd and barely even spin in 1st) so I spend a lot less time spinning but overall I'm very impressed with the Pilot Super Sports.

With all that said, I think your estimates for M5 tire longevity sound pretty accurate. If I can get mine to 15,000 miles I'll be a happy man.

11.7 sec 0-200 km/h is faster than Panamera Turbo S???

Edit;

Autobild Sportscars tested the Panamera Turbo S @ 11.8 seconds 0-200 km/h (april 2011)

Amazing that the X6M is faster out of the gate to 40km/h and 60km/h than the M5. I'm guessing it would be the same result for the X5M as well, and I think it must be due to the all-wheel drive system in the X6M/X5M providing a superior launch.

With the amount of power and torque now in the M cars, I'm suprised BMW isn't moving toward all-wheel drive systems in every M car. I guess the purists for some reason hate it, can someone explain why?

We asked that exact question (about an AWD F10 M5) in our recent interview with the BMWNA M Brand Manager.

See their explanation @ http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=637125

That's amazing beating panamera turbo s! That car costs a ton more. $174k here in the US. M5 is probably going to cost like almost half of that in the US. Good bargain when you look at it that way. Maybe I can convince the wifie with that logic

Shud we take these times as the most accurate of the M5?

We've read alot, car and driver put a time of 3.7 of 0-60 mph but this is a few secs slower.. on the other hand this review has a faster 0-120 mph time compared to the 12 sec one of car and driver..

wch shud we take as closer to reality?

This car will make 600 HP easy, once a tune comes out.

600HP? Try close to 700HP with tune + full exhaust + header
X5m tune only by Dinan is +56hp and +74lbtq just stage 1.

Internal engine plumbing on S63tu for F10 M5 makes S63 in X5m look like a kids toy. 600HP with just tune is forgone conclusion since S63tu is already making close to about 575hp (wink wink) I think most will be looking for close to 700hp

Call me a neophyte, but could someone explain what a "tune" means exactly? What is involved, what is changed, what is altered in a "tune"? Thanks.

A 'tune' strictly speaking refers to a software upgrade to the computer's ECU. Basically it changes up the engine's parameters, such as boost level, timing, air/fuel ratio, etc. to get the engine to produce more hp and torque.

Forget what was said above, a tune is a modification being made to the ECU - the computer controlling engine management. Sometimes it as with turbo engines, it is made to let it spool up more boost, thus MO' POWA! and with NA engines I'm not so sure how those tunes are made besides super chargers, which just forces more air in the chambers for MO' POWA!

I think the real engineers on this board can get into further details if need be.
