Top Speed

If the electrnic Nanny's were disabled, could the M5 go past 200 MPH?

Just curious if this has been documented.

I'm glad you asked this question because sometimes I hang out over on M5Board E60 M5 section and many of them seem to be convinced that the F10 M5 cannot reach 200mph.

As far as I am aware and to the extent of my knowledge, we still truly do not know. My personal beliefs are that yes it should be able to reach 200mph, given the horsepower and torque numbers alone. The only evidence I've seen, which to me is not completely legitimate, is some random YouTube videos of dudes over in the the Middle East who supposedly removed the limiter and show the speedometer of their M5 going over 330kph. There are also unproven claims that certain tunes remove the limiter as well, like the Evolve tune.

All I know is that if there was really a tune that could really remove the limiter so I could reach 200mph, I would have done it already. One day we'll know for sure, but when that will be is anyone's guess.

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that the vMax for the F10 M5 is 202 or 203 mph.

Well, go ahead and use interpolation... here is my car on the autobahn in the rain. 5th gear and 6000 rpm = 164mph/264kph. The car was continuing to accelerate before I had to let up for traffic (and i wasn't floored... just smooth throttle input). You still have two more gears and a bunch more RPM beyond this speed... others have already done the math -- 200 is possible, but getting there is equally as insignificant in this car as getting to a 1.7 60ft.

This car is an unbelievable machine that can outperform 99% of the people who drive it, myself included. Unless you have some incredibly gullible person who will instantly give you sexual favors upon hearing your car can go 200mph, don't worry about it so much -- your limited to 155 in the states (which the bmw will show as 164-169ish)

Finally, to call myself a complete hypocrite, I really wish I was in living in Germany with this car so I could legally experience its full potential every day.

Thanks

Thanks everyone. Agree with all your comments and realize at the end of the day it really does not mean anything. Luckily B1, you get to go real fast via other modes of transportation!

The F10 M5 not being able to reach 200!?! The MBoard E60 forum is not of the caliber it used to be. I've been a mod over there for a long time now. We all predicted it would become that way as the E60 price point dropped.

The 2006-2011 archived material on that forum is very good though.

I always thought that the M5 was geared to achieve vMax in 5th gear; 6th and 7th are for fuel economy and emissions purposes. The performance package raises the top speed to 190mph.

Yup, I agree 100% with you man. I go by BMWDave over there on M5Board and have been a member there for a long time. Yeah the age range over there is in direct proportion to the current price points of E60 M5's now, but it's funny how E39 owners seem to be mostly a lot older. Lol! Anyways, yeah I mostly speak up on threads there when it comes to talking about the F10 M5. There are so many misconceptions and just plain wrong facts that people in the E60 M5 world have accepted about the F10 M5 as gospel. The top speed of the F10 M5 being one of them. The Active Sound Design of the F10 M5 is another one.

On another topic has anyone in the U.S. tried to install the Euro Drivers Performance package on their F10 M5? Hmm...

Rarely even log in over on the Board. Just a different crowd.

Garage List
What are the tires rated at on the M5? I thought the speed was limited primarily because the tires (not the car) would not handle those speeds safely.

They are ZR rated which I think is 160mph+.

I've done 211mph (HUD indicated) on my old E60 M5 with Michelin PS2's. I'm confident that the PSS's can handle over 200mph.

Same, and I promised myself I would never do it again.

Thats why I find it silly for someone to say the F10 M5 won't hit 200, the highest speed tick mark indicated on the speedo.
