If there were no such thing as an F10 M5, I'd get this!

It's almost 400lbs lighter than an F10 M5 and 150lbs lighter than a 535i, all the while getting almost 40mpg and over 400tq. Plus I'm willing to bet there will be a tune out for it before the F10 M5 ever gets a real tune. Lol!

Also the 8 Speed autos are really great transmissions.

Also, before anybody says it, the United States does not get the M550d, so a 535d is the best we can do for a 5-Series diesel here. It still seems like a great car, although I'm sure the M550d would sell like hotcakes here in the American market. Especially with the number of people who live in the Northeast United States who need AWD for the winters.

Yep, you can choose either RWD or AWD for the 535d. Pretty cool to have a choice. Still cheaper than a 550i or 550xi though and one of my friends said that he has already driven a new 535d and said that it "feels" like it has a much thrust as a 550i. Also keep in mind that hte 535d is much lighter than a 550i.

Yeah I know, it's ridiculous. Not that a tuned M550d can beat an M5, but that there is no tune out yet for the M5 to fight back.

Ok, I'll play:

"If there were no such thing as an F10 M5, I'd get this," here's my entrant

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicle..._dynamics.html

The 5 touring has been my white whale, ever since I saw one blow past me on the autobahn 16 years ago.

Why can't BMWUSA / BMWNA give us the F11 in all variants? The 5GT is just plain ugly! Heck make a F11 M5, and really redefine the wolf in sheep's clothing image.

Had the X6 50DM for a day, not much difference in performance than the F31 330 D M Sport I just sold. M5 beater someone's on crack.

Drove one the other day and it was soo much fun; sounded great as well.. the engine roars and the torque is addictive! My next sedan is not going to be anything crazy anymore. The traffic is so crazy here these days that's its stop and go all the dang time.

Not convinced. I owned a 550i and drove an M550d and I preferred the 550i in terms of acceleration.

In Europe there are loads of tunes for the 530d (as it's called over here). The 535d in Europe has the twin turbo six. Twin turbo as in two separate turbos BTW.

But most of the tunes from the brand companies like Hartge, AC Schnitzer etc are piggybacks.

And as regards the M550d. Even though it runs the M5 close on paper, it doesn't feel anything near as special or fast as the M5. And it suffers quite a bit from turbo lag. Not that impressed. But sounds great inside due to active sound that in the M550d relays the REAL engine sound.

I've had an F10 535d for the last 3 years and did about 70.000 miles. I also had the M550d as a loaner for a couple days.
Both are great cars, but trust me. They don't even come close to the sensation and overall package of the M5.
Diesel Bimmers are great for smooth and effortless long distance cruising but you US guys shouldn't romanticize them. M Bimmers are still in a different league.
The M550d also has appalling steering - it felt like an S-class Merc of the nineties.

Our man Chris Harris wasn't too impressed either:

i had an E61 535d that I expected to keep for about a year, kept it for 7 years, it was a fantastic car, lots of space, lots of torque, fast, economical and very comfortable, maybe even more comfortable than the F10. put 80k miles on it and was sad to see it go.

Fell in love with a what I think was a bluewater e34 touring some 22 years ago (before I could drive, dealership where my father serviced his e36 saloon, same dealer I buy my BMWs from now). Loved the practicality of the tourings ever since, but, rather strange, always end up buying saloons

Would definitively have ordered an f11 m5 though.

To quote 'Jezzer' from his top gear test drive of the e60 535d (twin turbo), "lucifer has arrived in our land of milk and honey"....

Anyway the E350cdi 4-matic is better... oops sorry, wrong thread!
