I think the above hit the nail on the head. I couldn't find a good way to explain but he did.
The fact when you get in the car each day, start up the engine and then have an exciting experience where you really anticipate the experience. The roughness and race-car like sounds and chassis and the engine in both m3 and e60 m5 do this. Especially with aftermarket or no cats in the m3, it is a race-car. Sounds like the DTM car. I guess its a tough crowd to guage this from since most of the m5 owners probably do not value the exhaust and the experience over the many other benefits of the f10. I don't care about more power than my m3 so more power is not at all important. The thrust of my catless m3 is already extreme and perfect. The agility of both m3 and e60 were tremendous but it simply comes down to the enjoyment of the engines and knowing you can take it to 8400 rpms and the sound the car makes doing so is just exciting. The f10 simply seems less exciting each day. On a track I am sure it is awesome but its too refined for day-to-day excitment. You don't feel you are in a race car. You have an engine like so many other engines out there. 7k redline, turbo/supercharged v8. Dime a dozen now. The special feeling and excitment is what is lost in the f10. I will never get rid of my m3 and may actually pick up another e60 to keep. Sure an f10 as well but will be a lux cruiser rather than day to day |

Can anyone compare the E90 M3 to the E39 M5? I always liked the E39 M5 but missed my chance to buy one. I think I bought the E90 M3 to make up for that. I haven't driven the E39 M5 in over 9 years so I can't really remember what it was like. I would remember if it was memorable.

I'm in a similar situation as the OP... I went from E46 M3 > E60 M5 > E90 M3
Now i'm debating whether to jump on a F10 M5 or go non-BMW and get a W212 E63 AMG :P Sigh....1stworldproblems lol |

M3 is much quicker too as long as you are keeping the revs up above 6k which is hard for some to want to do. M5 is a lazy cruiser. m3 is a hyper bullet. the m3 is virtually identical to the e60 m5 in terms of driving experience. Same power delivery of a higih-revving engine etc |

I would beg to differ.. They are indeed very similar but I do agree that the M3 needs a lot more torque. Don't know about hyper bullet... The M3 is my slowest car in a straight line and it's modded but I do love the 6 speed in it and it's last of the NA V8's out there with a manual.

+1, I am not to sure where he is coming from.. lol When i first got my m5 i raced an m3 from a 30 roll and lets just say it was not pretty. I was atleast 8-9 car lengths ahead of him. Could be even more drastic now that shes broken in. |

I also had a V10 M6 and still have a highly modified e92. The new M5 is definitely a different car. Nothing will replace the instant gratification of a high revving naturally aspirated V8. Both the 458 and M3 share that trait, and its very exhilarating.
That being said, the new M5 is a pure monster and the best daily driver I've ever owned. I love it to pieces, even though I could compile a wish list for it. Damn, when are these manufacturers going to start making the perfect car, LOL We all know the answer is never. We'll always have something to wish for...

straight line is not very fast but the M3 is more built for the track. Much better suspension than the E39 M5 and turn in is much sharper.

The M5 is anything BUT a lazy cruiser. The word hyper bullet matches it much more. The M3 is never faster than the M5 not even in corners. Just look at how the M5 destroys the M3 in the nurburgring. Do you know what is the fastest BMW to ever go around nurburgring? It is the F10 M5.

It's still faster than a regular M3 in the most famous track known for its corners(600+ corners). The F10 M5 is also the 2nd fastest sedan in the world(after the Panamera Turbo S). Not bad for a "lazy cruiser".

Ummmm just being curious how many M5 owners are going to track their cars? If the track is your main purpose for owning I would say you purchased the wrong vehicle. 911S would have been your choice of weapon for handling, and low weight.
My M5 is a weekend car, and me and the lady take nice drives through the "twists" have some lunch see a movie. Better yet I sneak out at night and drive the thing like a bat out of hell. By no means is this thing slow or lazy; it's freaking crazy fast. Maybe some owners don't know about the M button(: Read old post on the V10 drivers hated the car, and said it looked like a jackelatern. Couldn't drive it around town because of the jerkiness, and now we have a car that's easy on the eyes with top quailty material. I have owned all the previous M's, and I can say this is the most satisfied I have been with any M product. I guess each to his own ...........the V10 is gone folks, but if you really want one they still sell them! My boss just sold his 2009 M5 for 47k with 14k miles for the F10 he smiles every day. Not knocking the previous M5 other than that ugly Bangle Butt it's time to move on fellas a new sheriff is in town code name F10. |

I would have to say that if I buy a car to take to the track, it would have to be the C6 Z06. I bought one of the first ones when they rolled off the assembly line and modded it until it became scary to open it up even in light traffic. Great car, noisy, unrefined and was a cop magnet. But, they are fast, cheap, parts are even cheaper and are almost disposable. And yet, they cannot be compared to M5's when you consider the total package. The M5 commands respect from all ages because it created this category of vehicle.

guys.. if you read the original post, the reference was to the E39 M5 as being the "lazy cruiser" not the F10.. but again I disagree with that too... The E39 with intake and headers, etc is anything but lazy..

yes my M5 will see track time along with the rest of my cars.. Why 911S? It's not the most powerful porsche, it's not the lightest porsche, it doesn't have the Metzger block... etc etc..

Have owned an E39 M5, two E60 M5's (one SMG, one 6 speed) and now an F10. Each generation, my opinion, has seen a marked improvement in the car's capabilities. Only have about 2k miles on the F10 and it is now hibernating quietly for the winter here in Michigan but it is by far a better car than any of the past cars. So much of what we each want out of a vehicle is subjective in nature. For me, I love that the F10 feels much more like an executive experience... however, it is SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful than the E60s and the E39. If you look beyond just the pure power, everything about the technology and comfort of the cars has improved as well. Did I miss the V10? Yes, until I took my first drive in the F10. Haven't thought about the V10 since...
I will not track the car, nor have I tracked any of my other M5s. On the street, the F10 is a great car and much more drivable, thanks in most part to the significant torque from the turbo configuration. V10 was great above 5,000 rpm. E39 was a solid all-around performer but just felt like a faster 540i6 that I had. My opinion is that I definitely made an upgrade over the E60. It's perfect for what I expect out of an M5 - civil and compliant 90% of the time, terrific and terrifying 10%. |

All I mean by a "lazy cruiser" is when comparing the e39 m5 to the e90 m3 which someone asked, the e39 m5 had a bunch of low end torque and you could be in any gear and push the pedal and get a nice punch in acceleration. You didn't have to shift hence the lazy. An m3 needs to drop 2 or 3 gears to get the same kind of acceleration and thus you are always "busy" shifting in a sense to keep the engine in its powerband.
The f10 m5 is the same way-lazy in the sense you can be in 7th gear and push the pedal to get a good surge of acceleration |

Official (SportAuto) F10 M5 time was 8:05 (same as E92 M3 from 2007)... I have no idea where FastestLaps (among other sources) got the 7:55 for the M5, but it wasn't SportAuto.
