I could slap myself right now.

I disabled the ASD after I got off work today. I couldn't take it for a test drive right away though, but I finally got a chance to go for about a 30 minute drive just now. Yeah the cabin is about 25% quieter now with my straightpipes. Love it! The drone is about 90% gone too! Just like Kev said! With straightpipes and the ASD ON, the drone range really was from 1,500rpm to 2,000rpm, but now with ASD OFF, the drone range went to 1,500rpm to 1,750rpm. I was testing it out. Also with the ASD ON there was a small drone range from 2,800rpm to 3,000rpm with my straightpipes, which I did like, but now that is completely gone. With the ASD OFF I feel like my M5 sounds a lot more pure now. Just like Kev said, I can't believe how much noise was being played through the speakers. With straightpipes, this is a lifesaver. I never thought of it before because I always believed that the ASD only played induction sound from the engine, but it really just amplifies a bunch of stuff of that the engine is doing. Yes, I agree that with stock exhaust the ASD does serve a purpose, but with aftermarket exhaust it's a hinderance and actually detracts from the cars comfort. I've been driving with tons of drone now for over 40,000 miles and now I feel like I've been saved from my own demise.

It does. Even the M6 Gran Coupe. Even the new F85 X5M and F86 X6M, even the M3 and M4. Heck all M cars now come with some form of ASD. It's out of control I tell ya!

I assumed the added sound inside the cabin was the tradeoff I had to accept for a more aggressive note outside. After a conversation with our World Class Sprinter compatriot, Boots, he convinced me to try the ASD cable disconnect and WOW, what a difference!! It's removed almost all the low end resonance, and the dreaded drone at 1500-1750 rpms is much reduced. It's almost whisper quiet cruising around town and especially at highway speeds. But when I nail it, the bark is glorious! The BEST of both worlds! My wife thought I changed my exhaust again. Even my B&O sounds so much different. I cannot believe that amount of manufactured sound was being pumped into the cabin. Anyone with an aftermarket exhaust should try it. Literally took me five minutes, and quickly reversible. Thanks again, Boots!
wow I sold my Turner exhaust because I got sick of the drone...unreal

Although I am running a muffler delete, I still have the stock resonators installed to help reduce drone. However, after turning ASD off, the drone has been dramatically reduced to the point that I am now considering removing the resonators to get a bit more "bark" out of the exhaust. Thoughts?

Is there any value in killing ASD with CP exhaust?

I don't think there might be any value. The CP exhaust just isn't loud enough.

All hail Boots, savior of my ears!

Seriously though, I'm still getting used to it. I love not feeling like the drone is intrusive into the cabin anymore.

Now I need to do it, too. Frickin ASD crap needs to be quietened. You M3/M4 race car drivers, please leave it on for your supercars, this is for the slow M5/M6 only. Oh and please stop trying to race me on the freeway, just assume you're already winning Think I need to debadge my car for all the Teslas, the M3/4's, etc, to leave me alone. M5/6 on the road is like the King roaming the jungle with e'one else around thinking "oh, I can take him down with a single blow". The King just nods in acceptance and keeps walking.

I just disconnected the connector following you guys instructions, but I didn't recognize any changes. Maybe on stock Exhaust there is no difference since the cabin noise is loud enough (on M6). I believe M6 does not have the cabin noise sealing that M5 has!!! BTW The location of Amplifier on M6 is slightly different from M5

Are you running stock exhaust still dude??

I feel like disabling the ASD is one of my all time favorite mods. It's just so much quieter but I can still hear the exhaust in the rear just great when ever I give it awesome throttle! Woohoo!

Yes Dave I'm running stock exhaust; however yesterday I disabled my friend's ASD (M6) and then we test drove the car. The difference is noticeable.

It will be more quiet I guess. My friend had "Turner race exhaust" and when we disabled the ASD, the drone was about gone!
I plugged mine since I like those noises

Thank u all for this great DIY mod. I also have a Turner muffler delete and contemplated changing it due to the drone. The cabin sound now has much less drone and my ears are forever grateful!

I disconnected mine in hardware, having previously used coding. No difference, but it proves the coding worked.

To remove the fir trees that hold the left side boot liner, prise out the centre pin from the black fir tree, then pull out the fir tree. Not much leverage is required to extract them.

To disconnect the wiring loom plug, the black clip needs to be rotated back to allow the plug to fall out. The black clip has to ease over a grey prong, which can be flattened with a screwdriver to allow the black clip to rotate.

5 minute job.

When you say the high pitched sound what do you mean??? I have had a persistent low sounding high frequency noise at 1900 rpm to 3000 that sounds like crickets...bmw says its the injectors because its present when you press the gas and not present when you let off. its enough to be heard when the radio is not on and is quite annoying...could it be the artificial sound system?
