Car thieves using tech to break in - M5 vulnerable?
I know I've seen a thread about this before but a little more information from this CNN newsclip on YouTube that was passed to me by my company's corporate security office. I'm curious if our M5s are vulnerable to this?

I'm also about to get a pet snake to keep inside of my M5.

Crazy. Don't usually keep anything in the car of value except the V1. Guess it is better than a broken window though...

they can't steal your car, just your valuables if exposed.

Looks like electronics that tricks the car into disarming an alarm and unlocking doors. I am wondering if the car has some type of RF emission that the device picks up on, and then calculate the make/model, and sends a corresponding unlock code back?

I think this "mysterious device" is constantly scanning/sending signals to the car which is in turn waiting and vulnerable for the fake/real unlock signal.
AFAIK one of the principles in modern burglaries was hijacking of encrypted frequencies between the key and the car over distance? Could it be the reason comfort access is added security and keys not working from a long distance? |

Actually, the two prominent theories are:
1. Small electromagnet that can cause a voltage drop via an electromagnetic pulse in the locking mechanism thereby triggering the lock switch. 2. Signal relay that relays nearby keyfob signals to the door. It's unlikely it's 2 though since it's happened to people nowhere near their vehicles. 1 seems plausible. |

Well the only thing they'll find in my car are prescription sunglasses and my Zaon MRX. Not a lot to steal.
This is at least better than having your window broken! @RPIM5 if you keep nothing in your car wouldn't you be better served with a less strong tint so people can see there is nothing to steal? I would think a tint is like gift wrap - behold the goodies that may lie here...

We need to find a way to install one of those James Bond car alarms that will electrocute the thief.
