One way of looking at this is that BMW has three tiers of M cars:
1: Pure M cars that have been extensively modified and developed by M. These are the M3, M4 (soon), M5 and M6. Possibly also the X5M and X6M falls into this category. But these two cars are also example of cars that don't fit into the original M mould. 2: Cars like the M135i, M550d and X5/X6 M50d. These are more close to standard cars and don't have a specific one digit M designation. Still, engine and drivetrain warmed over by the people at M. 3: The M-sport cars that are merely design and suspension. No engine or drivetrain changes. From a business and marketing standpoint it makes a lot of sense to take advantage of the sportiness etc. that is associated with M. Not doing that would be like a manufacturer taking part in F1, and never use that in marketing... If the hardcore M owners agree is a different matter. But I suspect that the majority of M owners really doesn't care (or even know). I suspect that hardcore M enthusiasts that are active on forums like this represents only a very small percentage of M owners... Especially when you see many of those driving around in M3 convertibles. I find it hard to believe that many of those are hardcore enthusiasts (trophy wifes, kids with cap backwards, older gentlemen etc.). However, I think that many on these boards are the kind of owners that the engineers at M really care about though |

The m sport package shoudn't look the same as the M5 and others. Keep them unique and different. The prices sure are different.

Updated with Facebook app to configure the LCI. Also shows the ///M badge on M-sport models.
