I've read great reviews of AMSOIL Signature 0W-30. However no one here has tried it as far as I know. The main reason I haven't used it is because it isn't BMW approved. So I am going to switch from BMW oil to Castrol Edge 0W-30 on Thursday if the dealer can fit me in.

I can find mobil 1 0w40 locally at some very fair price, but finding 0w30 or 0w40 Castrol would be pretty challenging. I know many people and dealership(s) use 5w30 for our cars. Just curious, if I use 0w30 or 0w40 as owner's manual recommends, would this really be better?

btw, which 5w30 Castrol should I use? Castrol Edge w/ TFST is more expensive and more difficult to come by while Castrol Edge w/ SPT is widely available @ much lower prices.

If you use 5W-30 just stick with the BMW oil. It's pretty good I think. I just sent my BMW oil to Blackstone so will post here when I get a report back.

In the mean time I am now running German Castrol Edge 0W-30. I think this offers better protection, particularly during startup when the engine is cold. I will report on this later, but for now the engine is running very smooth but to early to comment on any differences.

I am curious about where can I find 0W30 castrol? Here in Canada, my local dealer carries 5w30 only. I went to an independent shop and guys there told me Castrol does not supply 0w30 or 0w40 to Canadian market.

That's where I got mine too. However you need 2 cases not 1. Engine oil capacity is 8.9 quarts.

Cdn tire has the Castrol Edge with SPT 0w30 (German Castrol), when it is on sale, it's about $7 change per (1 litre) bottle. I usually buy a case of 6.

The front will say European Formula and the back will say Made in Germany.

Good news! I found the castrol 0w30 ($10.97) at Walmart and they also carry 0w40 ($11.97) now.

Strangely, it was Canadian tire told me that castrol doesn't supply 0w30 to Canadian market. I guess the guy works there must be new or something. I remember seeing them but they weren't on the shelf there anymore.

Is this what you recommend for our cold Prairie Winters?

How many Litres does the M5 F10 require?

It's actually 9 liters (or about 8.9 to be exact). Less if you only do an oil change without oil filter. However for break-in service, spec states:
- Engine Oil + Oil Filter
- Differential Oil
- Transmission Oil (manual only)
- Disable break-in service alert

Is it a big deal to use Mobil One? I just got the light at 8800 miles, only thing I could readily find was Mobile One 5w-30. I could order it on Amazon but didnt know if it made a difference. Does BMW "recommend" it b/c of sponsorship? Isn't this like telling me I have to use Exxon gas as opposed to Mobil gas?

In a word, yes-M1 works great. That said, you can get Mobil 1 0W-40 European Formula @ Wal Mart all day long. I run Mobil 1 oils in everything from my Harley, to my wife's and kids' cars, to my Duramax Diesel, to the M5.

I read that mixing viscosity might not be a good idea, I found M1 5w30 at the gas station, figured I'd at least keep that the same.

This is correct, you don't want to mix viscosity. I was referring to complete oil changes, sorry.

The brand name of engine oil will NOT cause damage to any engine.
Just make sure you are using the correct weight.
There are specific specifications / additives that are important for warranty related purposes.
Choose wisely !! lol

MINE IS 2015 F10 M5, and my manual says 0w-30 or 5w-30, i do not see 0w40 or 5w 40, why is that, every one says 0w30-40 or 5w30-40.
did something change,

Just look for the right spec on the can and the weight difference shouldn't matter. I haven't had a turbo motor before, and perhaps the oil spec is more important in this application.

0W30/5w30/5w40 for stock F10 M5 engines. I used Castrol Edge 5w30 of BMW 0w30 when the car was stock.

Now, after tuning to 720hp and over 1000Nm I consider to go to Motul 300v 5w50.
