My friend has the 20" and I have the 19". Comfort/ride quality wise - slightly better with 19". Not that big difference that you would think. A bigger difference is in grip levels. 19" ( higher sidewalls ) gripping better it seems. Especially when exiting a corner ( side force on the tyre ).

Thanks! Wow that imperial blue metallic looks really good with the 19's. I might he even have to say i like the 19's better, or the same as the 20's!

Are you referring to the photos directly above? That's Singapore Grey actually.

I'm a big fan of aftermarket rims - easiest way to set my car apart in an area where M5s and even lambos are "common".
I'd get the standard 19's and throw snows on them for winter, especially since the potholes are bad in the winter months. Then get aftermarket 20's for the spring and summer. The 20's as an upgrade seem kind of pricey since they're probably going to run like $3k for the option. (edit, was way off on the option price) you could put that $3k into a set of 20s and sell your 19's to someone with regular F10 if you opt not to do a winter setup. That's my plan as I live on the Hudson right across from NYC and the roads are similarly bad. I should also say that I don't particularly like the M5 20's - they're too "open" for me. I plan on going with a Mesh one piece concave wheel like the HRE P40-SC Last edited by PatrickC23; 04-26-2012 at 07:32 PM.. |

Wheel gap
So by going from 19" to a 20" setup, are you aesthetically "lowering" your car by 0.42 inches by reducing wheel gap?
19" tire on the rear is 295/35, which is 103.25 mm or 4.06 inches - with the 19 inch wheel its 23.06 inches. 20" tire on the rear is 295/30, which is 88.5 mm, or 3.48 inches - with the 20 inch wheel its 23.48 inches. Am I going about this correctly?

I am from the NE as well.. frequented NY/NJ/PA.
You should get two sets of wheels.. 19's and 20's. Use the 19's for snow. Wheel and tire insurance is a must (if such is possible with aftermarket wheels). Being in NY, no matter how careful you are, sometimes you end up hitting that really bad pothole.. and 19's vs 20's make the difference between bubble in tire or not, or sitting at side of road or not. If you arent open to 2 sets of wheels, you should probably go with 19's for practicality reasons (although 20's are nicer IMO). Good luck. |
