I would question why the parents would put such a powerful car into the hands of such a young kid and driver. This kind of power in the hands of a wrong person is a deadly equation. I remember reading a story a few years ago about a kids in Ocala, FL who had an E60 M5 and ended up killing himself and four passengers because of his inability to exercise responsibility and good judgement. Ended up putting the car up in a tree and going off the end of an airstrip by not properly judging the length of the runway.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=4198416&page=1

Although the article says he "snuck" the car onto the runway people that knew him said it was his car.

Depends on how mature he is, Im very close to that age. As long as you know your ''limits''.

what does age have anything to do with anything? You do know that the only current American to hold a F1 super license right now and hopeful as the next American in F1 just turned 21 and won Formula BMW in the US and then Europe in 2007.. I took a ride with him last year and I would say he's more talented than all of us

It's not about talent, it's about judgement followed by decision.

I am getting further away from that age but very much agree that its up to the drivers judgement, ability and awareness more then age, though I definitely have settled down over the years.... Irony is I just got my first bad ticket a couple nights ago, I might still be to young for this car.

I took some courses i.e. http://www.bondurant.com/services/bondurant-methodologyhttp://www.proformanceracingschool.com/about and competed as a teen after getting hurt racing dirt bikes and needing a safer hobby...

Wouldn't look weird. Just a dude driving his dad's car.

Now if you are asking would I buy my 19yo son a new M5? The answer would be fuck no.

OP did not ask about driving talent. BUT, bottom line is this: on average, a 19 year old makes poorer decisions behind the wheel than a 38 year old. that doesn't prevent the 38 year old from driving like an idiot. but we are talking in general. what does it look like? looks awesome if you're the 19 year old. looks inappropriate if you're not. unless your last name is zuckerman.

Well agreed, sometimes this car gets the best of everyone no matter what age. Driving courses is definitely a smart idea and thank you for the kind words!

Thanks to everyone for their input. I an fortunate enough to decide on buying an M car. I was looking at an M3 and a 550i but some people told me an M5 might be better if I can afford it. Haven't done the math yet but it is something I would like lol. And as for my driving.. I was always into cars as a kid. Took a lot of driving courses since I was 16 lol.

Mid 20's and I own an M5. Does it look weird? No. Are people mad? Yes.

Telling people it's my dad's car usually ends awkward conversations.

If the question is restricted to this board, a 19 year old would be fine with an M5. But in general, putting any 19 year old behind the wheel of such a powerful car is a bad idea. I even don't allow older drivers to just take a spin in my car. If you're not used to it, this could be lethal.

When I saw the title of this thread, it was the first thing I thought of. I was around that night when we started reading the news story and began looking for this kid on another BMW forum (he had been talking some trash on the forum earlier that night and a bunch of us were trying to talk him down). After a while, we came to the realization that it was him in the story. The posts were chilling and were soon removed. Sorry to sound like an old guy, but if you've got kids, you don't forget nights like that.

Yes I am telling you that. However I am not saying I am more skilled. I had a E36 M3 when I was 19 and I did a lot of stupid things with that car. It's human nature. A 19 year old typically has nothing to lose and that changes things. Now of course there are exceptions to that. It depends on the individual. Just like the guy on here is was flying B-1's. You have to be a pretty leveled headed person to have that responsibility at a young age. Or maybe this 19 year old started young and has a family. That should change your decisions and judgement. Look, all I'm saying is that IMO typically 19 YO guys are reckless. Especially if you are handed a $100,000 600 HP car that you didnt work for. Again, this is my opinion and there most are certainly exceptions.

You know, actually, I was at a Landmark Education Advanced course a couple of months ago and they were demonstrating a part of the human brain that doesn't fully develop until the age of 26. Happens to be the part that allows you to understand "I might die". They were discussing how easily it is to train young men in the military for battle. Turns out courageousness, while admirable, is not always courage. sometimes it is simply "I don't know better".

My first comment said "more power to them". I won;t delete it but will retract it. My son will NOT drive a powerful car when he is 16. I remember EXACTLY how I drove. I still tend to "get on it" today but with nowhere near the fearlessness of my teen years.

I'm 21 and I got my M5 last week. I had a 530i for 6 years prior to that. Age is just a number, what really matters is your maturity level and your judgement. Just don't make dumb decisions. Whether you're 19 or 35, the majority of people will not make the correct decisions 100% of the time. You just have to be careful..No, it won't look weird.
