Hurricane SANDY

Okay, so my car is on the PORGY (currently at the NY/NJ port), its scheduled to depart tomorrow and arrive at the Brunswick, GA port on Monday, 10/29.

Does anyone know if hurricane Sandy will affect the Brunswick, GA arrival date?

I'm no Al Roker, but I'd say it's likely. Sandy's supposed to come barreling up the east coast over the next few days. I would not be surprised if they keep her in the protection of the harbor until the storm passes. Or maybe try to get a little farther south and hide up the Delaware or in the Chesapeake.

Very nice. I'm on the Toronto, due into Baltimore on 10/30. It has been such a long wait - placed my order on August 9th. However, at the end of the day, I'd rather it arrive a few days behind schedule instead of pushing through the storm and jeopardizing ship and crew.

It doesn't look bad actually. They would be off the coast of SC on Sunday night, well away from the hurricane if they leave NY as scheduled. The hurricane track is quite Far East of the GA and SC coast.

Agreed. NHC is calling for only 4-6 foot seas during this time. Nothing these boats cant deal with.

Thanks for the last two positive replies on this thread, thinking my Mistress may be on that ship as my bimmer rep said she was due in Monday and I have been worried sick about her. Painting the garage on my new pad for her arrival, also bought two 5' wide BMW flags that are being framed for the garage for her and her little sister aka 650CI

Philly Dee aka "The Word" hope you are well brotha! Will pop you an email soon. FYI never got pics of your ride, Bobby aka Ricky Bobby

Wow! This is great information.

How do I get this website information, besides asking you every hour for an update!

Thanks.

You go to this website. And search for the vessel name.

http://marinetraffic.com/ais/

The Porgy is now into the Atlantic so its definitely headed for GA. It seems ETA is 0000 EDT on Monday if this information is accurate.

This may still be an issue. According to the AIS info - the est. arrival at Brunswick was saying Wednesday when I checked this morning.

This said - it seems odd. Normally if there is a delay you would set an intermediate destination for safe harbour. It is still saying destination Brunswick and it has left New York.

Again, I'm no Al Roker, but I thought I heard on the news the west side of a hurricane is the strongest. Porgy may be heading out into the Atlatic to pass around the east side of the storm where it's less violent. That might explain the extra days.

Yes I think this second hypothesis is correct rather than your first one.

The boat has gone to the right of the storm into the Ocean.

It is now off the grid. Nobody knows when it will arrive in Brunswick. Wednesday is best guess at this stage but it could be a 5 day delay depending on how far they went.

You are correct. The northwest quadrant will be the strongest area of this storm and the crew is likely trying to avoid it at all possible. The fact that it sailed puzzles me a little bit, though, because RORO vessels are a somewhat risky design and are not suitable for sailing in any sort of inclement weather.

Why? Doors very close to the waterline and open decks inside with few to no bulkheads. Water that enters and sloshes around can cause something called free surface effect which can cause the boat to capsize. (Think of what it's like holding a pot filled with water - when the water moves around, it makes it difficult to control the stability of the pot, etc.) The high exterior walls help the seaworthiness but any water that enters could be catastrophic.

I'm sure the captain and crew know what they're doing so hopefully all will be well and you'll have your car in a matter of days. After my parents lost a Volvo XC90 on the MV Tricolor a number of years ago shipping by sea still spooks me but I don't make enough yet to have my car flown by 747 Freighter like I see constantly headed to Dubai at JFK.

It is a real concern.

I just hope they don't damage the cars in turbulent waters and then repair them.

The GM said they're written off and destroyed and that BMW would never repair and sell them because of potential liability later on.

Something similar happened to Mazda several years ago on the Cougar Ace. The ship listed severely after a ballast dumping mistake. It remained listing for months while salvage operations were carried out. One of the salvagers was killed. Once the cars were finally unloaded their airbags were deployed and they were all crushed. Mazda couldn't confirm what several months on an incline would do to the cars so they made the expensive decision to write them off. In my opinion, it was the right decision.

Courage Holding in Position Post Sandy

Amazing video ... I'm on the Courage, from the tracking info on Sailwx.info, after making terrific progress from Bremerhaven with an arrival into NY of 10/31, she is now slowed and appears to be holding position NE of Nova Scotia waiting out Sandy. W&W has officially moved her arrival date in NY by four days. While this wait and delay after a great ED experience is painful, I do realize there is greater impacts ahead for NY! Lets all hope this storm has a fraction of the impact to our country/economy as the news is predicting.

That is interesting. I just checked and you are indeed right - Courage shows an arrival date of November 3rd so it changed ont he W&W website.

However Porgy is still showing 10/29. I wonder why they haven't updated it - based on the last known track - I can't imagine them possibly reaching GA today.
