I had a 2012 M5 and just sold it.. 47,000 km all driven like I stole it, and never ever got a single problem. Fantastic car and nothing to worry about. You should be able to get a good price.

OP, sorry I dont have much info on the first yr F10 M5 reliability.

My question for others is why does it seem this generation is more reliable (first yr models) than say the E60 or even E39 M5's when those first came out?

BMW may have gotten it right this time or the major issue has not arrived yet as many have not gotten over 100k miles.

Good point. I remember the E39 having VANOS issues pretty early on and the E60 having issues with the SMG Transmission. Seems that carrying over the DCT (similar at least to the E90/ E92 ///M's) has helped.

Like you said, I guess time will tell.

The highest mileage I've seen on a 2013 M5 so far is 61,000 miles. There may be some 2012 M5's that have higher mileage, but so far there hasn't been dozens of people reporting transmission, engine, or any other major systems failures. I've only heard of one engine problem so far where the engine had to be replaced and it was still under factory warranty.

Great car, you'll love it!

I've had mine for 40,000km , bought it 6 months old with 1800km on it, in as new cond.

Since I have driven as it was designed to be driven, incl a couple of track days, planning to keep it thorugh to about 60km's

Nothing major has happened at all, however when you test drive it make sure you lower the drivers window and go around some round about's, and turn all the way to the lock - listen for a tick tick noise, its known fault, if you hear it - get it fixed prior to buying it.

I would also really strongly recommend you buy from a main dealer, under the factory backed used warranty!

A car this complex - could be a cruel mistress....

But definitely go for one!

Cheers

Is that yours Dave? @61k? Or someone elses? Trying to figure out if you have pulled ahead of me on the mileage again. I'm at 48k.

Known 2012 issues:

1. Clunk in the rear suspension
2. turbo collant tubes heat shield retrofit
3. ticking on full lock as Stu mentioned
4. drivetrain malfunction error because of software issues

I think they are the main ones. Mine is a 2012, i have had all of the above issues, and they have all been fixed successfully. I am very happy with the car.

I had a MY07 335i that I bought in 2006 and never had a problem with it in 3 years. So, I think if you do research, there are typically recalls or at least TSBs on any model year and I don't think they're a deal breaker. The posts above outlined the problems for MY12 and I think you should write them down and take it to the seller to see if these things have either been addressed or confirm that there's no issue. Just because problems arise, they don't affect every MY car. Would be nice if it was CPO'd, if not I would spend for the extended warranty. Buying used is nice because someone else took the depreciation hit, but obviously there's more risk.
