All of you guys in the US must have bigger cojones than me to test this on any public road...pretty sure if ever caught my M5 would be sitting there without me being able to drive it for a long long time even if I could afford the insurance after ...kudos to you I guess :
I'm fine with 155 limit I know it's limited but would do close to 200 if not |

I've got no need to be able to go over 155, so the limiter doesn't bother me either.

185 in my 2001 M5 in Wyoming. At least that is what the speedo said. Had all the Dinan upgrades. What was crazy is how fast it went from 120 to 180. That car was a blast. 4 sets of tires and 2 clutches in 4 years. Had 2 E60 M5's and now an F10. My E39 was the most fun. Couple of really shorts runs in my other cars in Europe have gone to a little over 190.

The speedo correction can be coded off for sure. The limiter seems to be another story.

I'd have to look at the gear ratios again, but i think, delimited, top speed would be achieved in 6th fear, not 7th. I think the ratio in 7th is too low.

Being based in the UK and doing frequent trips to Germany, I find this speed limiter somewhat frustrating - I've had some fast cars, some that are faster up to around 100mph. But none, not even my 997.2 Turbo or SLS AMG touches the M6 for 100+ acceleration and the speed it hits the limiter at an indicated 169/170mph is impressive. And annoying.
I'm not keen having the limiter removed by an aftermarket tuner and then risk losing my warranty on a £100k car. Indeed, I'm not even convinced any tuners know how to do it - one in the UK who said they could then wanted my car 'for a few days' to work out how to do it, which seems a bit risky for me. Anyway, I contacted AC Schnitzer in Germany last week (as they appear to have a fairly robust warranty) and whilst they also can't do it, they have arranged for the BMW dealer they're based at (in Aachen) to retro-fit the proper M-Drivers Pack (so I also get the M Trackday and tuition that any European buyer would get if they spec'd it from new). I'm going to Berlin next Wednesday so I'm having it fitted on the way - I hope it works! |
