at one point someone suggested that u.s. spec m5s have adjustable side bolsters but the buttons are just removed from the seat. did anyone ever find out about this?

Which I believe the answer was no.

However retrofitting it may be a possibility. Still unknown at this point.

I thought the side bolsters were NOT in 2012 due to legal reasons and then they were supposed to be in the 2013's ??

Ha! Reviving a dead topic? A beat to death post?

Yeah it was I, the infamous RPiM5 that got BMW NA to officially release a bulletin about the missing 20-way seats, aka adjustable side bolsters.

The final conclusions of the investigation were that BMW did not include them in North American M5's due to difficulty in federalizing the design with the U.S. government. I think it was either the same case with the Canadian government or it was just laziness to have all M5's shipped to North America not have them.

Regarding the second question, no they are in fact not retrofittable. If you want them, you will have to buy a whole new seat. The mechanical inner workings of adjustable side bolsters are just not present in the North American seats. I have heard of one guy over here that went ahead and bought entirely new seats with the adjustable side bolsters in them I think. it's THE only way.

Also, in case anybody is wondering, it is still unknown if BMW actually listened to the tantrum we threw about this last year with the 2013 model M5 was finally released to the North American market, but we are hoping that for the 2014 LCI generation F10 M5, they redesigned the air bag design so that we could have adjustable side bolsters again. However, this would be a slap in the face to 2013 owners and I wouldn't hold your breath. Just my opinion.

oh well. i do think the seat belts pre-tension more frequently to offset the lack of side bolster.

Me and RPiM5 did the two day M driving school and I found that the seats, albeit no bolster sport, were more than accommodating even under track conditions. Dave care to chime in?

After driving the m3 and m6 with them, I do miss having them. I just like being locked in!

Absolutely the M5 seats were more accomodating than the M6 seats. Which makes no sense as the M6 is a sportier car. However the M3 seats I loved them as far as side bolster support went. I'm a pretty thin guy and even the M3 seats hurt the sides of my back when the bolster were fully in. The M5 and M6 should have side bolster support as good as the M3. Even so, I wasn't sliding around in the seat of the M5 at all, it just has better shoulder support than the M6 as well.

After driving my Porsche with sport bucket seats, I've completely abandoned this side bolster argument. Now THAT's how a seat should lock you in
