Excessive oil consumption?

Anyone else experiencing excessive oil consumption? I dropped in 2 quarts for 3000 miles (total 4400 miles on car). There's a few threads about it here but has anyone had any solution from the dealer?

I refuse to accept 1 quart per 1000 miles is "normal" operation (as told to me by the dealer). Having been in the automotive business I have seen this situation en-masse twice. Once was Nissan's first generation VQ35 engines which tended to have bad piston rings on cylinders 5/6 and once on Subaru cars running bad seals on the MHI turbochargers. In both instances I believe the OEMs calculated that it would be cheaper to tell customers excessive consumption was "normal" and to deal with the blown/damaged vehicles one by one rather than attempt to service all the problem vehicles. But this doesn't mean there isn't a problem and it doesn't mean the OEMs are being honest to owners.

Having owned quite a few performance cars and current vehicles include a nissan gtr and 911 turbo I've never experienced this amount of oil consumption in OEM trim - twin turbo or otherwise on "performance" engines. (dealer is trying to tell me M5 is a supercar motor heh) In fact the GTR and 911 turbo goes through half a quart every 3000 miles (granted with 2x less cylinders). Heck in modified applications where oil pressure was high and we used to get some blow-by on the turbocharger bearings or build the motors extremely loose on purpose it would be more unusual than not to consume a quart every 1000 miles.

I'd like to get some feedback on this from anyone else experiencing these problems. Does it get better or worse?

Thanks.

Wow that's a lot!

I just don't accept that as normal. Having owned a business that built quite a few (hundred) performance engines over the years this type of oil consumption isn't normal except on the loosest race engines. The BMW M5 isn't a race engine, it's a performance sedan that should act like one. There are MANY high power production cars that don't consume anywhere near 1 quart every 600 miles.

Anyone know where that oil is blowing through? The cold/hot expansion cannot possible be that aggressive that it's losing that much oil during warmup ???

Not much I can do. I know it's not thenorm. But dealer shop foreman checked out my complaint and called up BMW Germany to ask whether it's acceptable or not, the answer given to me was within acceptable limit as he showed up the service bulletin issued by BMW M division.

Accoording to BMW for M-engines 1,5 liter / 1000 kilometers is the limit.
If you're car uses more, it's not acceptable (by BMW)

For non M-engines the max consumption : 0,7 liter / 1000 kilomters.

BMW says you may only do a calcualtion after running at least 7500 kilometers.

I notice it mostly on long drives. Thats when mine eats the most. Or at least it seems that way to me.

I don't have an M5, but I don't buy it either. Had similar issues on a previous BMW and the dealer fed me the same story. The consumption continued to get worse with mileage. Good luck!

I had the same thing with my E60, but I think that is because the long drives cause the levels to be re-checked.

Just took my 2013 M5 in, it's been drinking oil since day one. BMW refuses to look at a new vehicle until so many kilometers (15000km I think). Anyhow oil top-ups are considered abnormal with less than 1200km/per fill. My fill-up this month was at just over 1000km. So now my dealership says they have found a 'puma notice' about a new valve cover gasket (from Germany) that provides better separation. No external oil leak was found so my gasket is on order and will be replaced in a few week. Fingers crossed I will no longer have to add a quart of oil every other gas fill-up.

I topped up 1 quart at about 5700km. It was also the first time I topped up since the 2000km break in service.

I have had no issues with excessive oil consumption at 12k miles. My E60 would use about 1 quart per 1000 miles. My Panamera used 1 quart per 1000 miles and it was also stated in the owners manual that would be the consumption. the green coalition has now driven auto manufactures to build engines with more clearance on rings to decrease emissions..... This leads to more oil,consumption....

This is a good document from BMW regarding oil consumption on our cars and others.

This is normal - all manufactures have this 'issue'. Some cars use more or less.

BMW will not look at your car if your consumption is above the limit.
