One Lap of America M5 - Day 3 Update

Monday turned out to be a good day for the BMW M5 team, with good results in both sessions which moved us up the order. But before we cover the competitive portion of the day, I thought I’d cover activities prior to getting on track at each event.

First order of business on arrival is to secure a good parking location for the day, preferably covered to protect our equipment and crew from any inclement weather or scorching sun. Once positioned we all have our task to accomplish. We all quickly unload the M5 and then depending on time, we’ll walk the track to getter feel for the racing line, sight lines and changes in pavement condition. If time is short Mike will walk the track, while Tom and I to work on prepping the car. Tom responsible for checking mechanicals, tire pressures, wheel nuts, and fluid levels. I’ll check the video equipment and mount it on the M5. This year we have three video cameras; one on the front bumper, a second on the passenger door and a third in the cabin. Additionally we are using an iPhone App to record lap times and G loadings, which can be overlaid on video.

Hallett is a 1.8 mile, 10 turn race track with 80 feet in elevation change and located near Stillwater, Oklahoma. Today Mike really got the M5 hooked up and posted two good times at Hallett which help us climb up the leader board in both overall and c lass positions. We’re now 13th overall and 3rd in class, and now the it’s a matter of pinching a tenth here and there to hopefully creep into the top 10.

As things stand after Hallett we have 1915 points, good for 14th overall, and only 20 points behind the 13th place team in a Corvette Z06. So if Mike can continue to peddle the M5 round in the same manner as today, hopefully we can challenge for positions further up the leaderboard. Class wise we’re on 205 points, 15 behind Dan & Ben Schaut’s extremely fast E90 M3 and 35 points behind another highly modified E90 M3 of David Chow & Nathan Sumner.

Yes.

Handling has improved over the previous E60 BMW M5, and they way the car turns in for a corner is amazing, especially when you take into account the size and weight compared to the competition.

Ahead of us we have 6 Nissan GTR's, 2 'vettes, 1 Viper, 1 Porsche 911, 1 Mitsubishi Evo X, 2 BMW M3's, & 1 CRX. And all except for one GTR are heavily modified.

Check the car out for yourself. Sign up for one of the M Schools at the BMW Performance Driving School. The car is expected to be in the fleet by July this year!

Unfortunately I just did the 2 day M School but had a blast despite no F10 M5. But I do have a BMW 101 experience coming up. I plan to wait for the F10 M5 to arrive, and hope to at least get a hot lap in it.

One Lap of America M5 - Day 4 Update

After a 650 mile drive from Hallett, OK to Limon, CO we were pretty well exhausted last night, so were happy to enjoy a good night’s sleep at out Holiday Inn Express, and so did a major contingent of other One Lap competitors.

After breakfast and a visit to the local car wash we made our way over the back roads of the Colorado foot hills to High Plains Raceway, located in the rolling hills of Deer Trail, about 60 miles east of Denver. This is the third Alan Wilson designed track we visit on this year’s event and I think most competitors rate this as one of his best. The track itself is features 19 turns and 80 feet of elevation change within its 2.5 mile course.

We shared one of the covered paddock spaces with a four of other BMW teams, so it was great to finally have the opportunity to share notes and experiences from the last few days. Even though many of us are competing in the same class, we are all ready to support each other and share friendly banter.

High Plains is a new track to probably 90% of us, so the first order of business was to walk the track and learn the line as best as you can. The weather appeared to be almost perfect, beautiful blue skies and white clouds hanging in the sky, but appearances can be deceptive as the temperature was like a roller coaster, one minute you were looking for a jacket and the next back to a shirt. Quite humorous watching everyone’s attire constantly changing, but as time passed by the weather began to stabilize.

In the morning session Mike ran a 6:27.701 over three laps finishing 17th overall and after lunch picked up a couple of seconds with a 6:25.560 but remained in 17th position.

One Lap of America M5 - Day 5 Update

A very short update for day 5 of the One Lap of America as the day was pretty hectic with 3 events at Hastings Motorsport Park; two time trials & an autocross. Then we had a 650 mile drive up to Brainerd, MN for tomorrow’s events.

The two time trials went well with Mike piloting the M5 around to 16th overall with a 5:05.239 in the morning and an afternoon time of 5:07.226 good for 17th. Then it was time for the autocross which was rather short and tight due to space constraints. Definitely not conducive to good times if you happen to have a large car or SUV.

Congrats on the good showing! Especially with all the modded supercars that were running.

So what were the final stats and analysis? Miles traveled? MPGs? Good points? Bad points?

Also will the car become one of the BMW PC fleet or is it one of the BMW NA cars and has to go back there?
