Comfort Access Question

Doing a search online this came up - I believe it was originated by a member here - AGS. I think this was back when there was confusion on the BMWUSA site with configurations (comfort access, ceramic brakes etc)

"Just so everyone is aware, the keyless start "half" of the Comfort Access we are familiar with on the E60 is now standard on all cars. It's a safety issue - peoples knees hitting the key in an accident. I confirmed this with the sales manager at my dealer. So what the Comfort Access option now gets you is the keyless entry "half" of the package."

Is this the case? If so, if you DO NOT get exec package, can you still drive without the key in ignition?

Ha! Thanks - as you can tell I dont have my F10 yet! So what is comfort access option in Exec package entail? Opening the trunk with your foot? Opening the doors as you approach vehicle with the key?

comfort access cars usually have a chrome door handle strip. and or small ridges above the handle.

you can lock and unlock that door your fingers on or all doors. as well open/close windows, sunroof and mirrors.

you can also open the boot by moving your foot under rear bumper.

You can open any of the four doors or the trunk with the key in your pocket. You can also lock the doors without they key, so when you're coming and going throughout the day there's no need to ever touch your key as long as it's on your person somewhere. I thought it was a gimmick, now I find it to be very inconvenient when I need to find and pull out my key to open my other car.

Also, I coded my car so when I'm getting out I can hold my finger on the little ridges on the door handle and it will close the windows and sunroof. No more getting out of the car and seeing that a window is open, crawling back in, and closing the window. Very nice.

Leave key in pocket. Doors and trunk will open based on key proximity sensor. Foot open of trunk. You can lock car by touching top of door handle.

It's a must have IMO.

This is what I am contemplating right now - as I have never had comfort access, it's not something I would miss. I understand that when I have it, I may love it, but I also get its a must have for you guys that have previously had it. My C63 and M3 had the feature to shut doors and windows, albeit with the key, but Ive never actually used the feature. By habit I always roll up window and sunroof prior to even parking.

For me, looking over exec package, the only thing I really NEED is HUD, and would get regardless along with Apps.

Watch them make Comfor Access a stand alone feature once I take delivery.

Get the package if only for the HUD... simply the best piece of interior technology in years.

As for the key thing... as I recall the F10s without comfort access have 1 sensor that receives the signals from button pushes on the key and perform the desired actions.

With comfort access, there are actually 5 different sensors that detect the key fob and allow the chosen actions to occur. For instance there is one in the trunk.. if you throw your key in the trunk, you cant lock the trunk. It also uses the sensors to know which door you are walking up to so it can be opened.

Finally as alluded to, CA cars have special door handles that have ridges on top. Simply press your finger on the them to lock the doors when you leave the car.... (to unlock you just pull the handle with the key in your pocket).

Thanks for the insight. Ill deliberate some more. As for HUD, I'll get it regardless, stand alone option or as part of exec pack.

If you order HUD as a stand alone option, carefully watch your build. Another board member tried that and his car showed up missing the HUD.

Ok I caved - requested to have Executive package added (removing HUD and apps as stand alone options).

Hopefully I have enough time for my March 23rd ED. Edit - SA was able to make the change

Great call, in my opinion, the Executive Package is a must. It just has too many features that I think are necessary in a car like this.

Question - so when you leave the car, do you guys lock it? Or does the car lock once you get past a certain distance from the car?

Also - (since Ive actually done this) My wife and I share a car, I get in the car with key in my pocket with my wife. I drive us to the gym where she drops me off and I leave with the key in my pocket but dont turn off the engine. She proceeds to take the car for errands. Will the car warn her that the key is no longer in proximity to the car? Obviously the car wont restart for her if she stops the engine.

The car won't autolock if you leave it with the car in your pocket.
It will warn you if you leave it running and walk away with they (big warning in your NAV screen and dashboard).
If you turn off the engine without the key close by you have appr 10 seconds to restart it

Keyless entry, not keyless exit, got it. But is it a simple touch of the handle to lock it? Guess thats still keyless.

I depends ... if you want your wife to take your car and not return ...

But seriously , yes locking/opening is just touching any of the four door handles,
the trunk opens either via key fob or comfort access by "kicking" under the rear bumper.
I'd never buy a car without comfort access, had it on my last 4 and it's a must have feature (for me) .
CA is also used for audio settings, seat memory and much more .

CA also notices which key is the closest one opening the car , so you and your
wife can have the keys with you at all times. Just need to make sure whoever wants
the key to be used for settings etc is first at the car/opening.
