Something tells me the next generation M5 is going to be incredible

I just hope they don't incorporate a 6 cylinder quad turbo engine or something like that. Lol!

It will have an 8 cylinder modular engine with adjusting piston head chambers (APHC) that adjust the angle of each bank (1 bank = 2 opposing chambers) to counter act the effects of cylinder deactivation.

The number of banks active will be identified by a new confusing label based on the number of cylinders in play:

1 bank active is represented as "2-6" mode.
2 banks active is represented as "4-4" mode.
3 banks active is represented as "6-2" mode.
4 banks active is represented as "8-0" mode.

(Should the vehicle believe it has been stolen, there will be a special "0-8" mode.)

The angle of the active banks is automatically adjusted based on the load on the engine and the mode that is active.

This enables the most optimum angle for running in 2cyl, 4cyl, 6cyl, and 8 cyl mode.

Each bank will be fed by a single ultra-small turbo incorporated into the head cover of each of the for each of the piston chambers and fed by it's own intake filter.

Intake snorkles will be moved to the rear of the vehicle for weight distribution and to give it 'the visual effect' of more exhaust ports. This will be the "More pipes out the back = faster" design language that we have all been waiting for.

EPA estimates are 50 mpg in 2 - 6 mode and 12 mpg in 8 - 0 cyl mode.
The same motor will be placed in all vehicles due to its efficiency, but locked into a specific mode (2-6, 4,4 6-2, 8-0) based on how much you paid for the vehicle.

This will allow the buyer to have the ultimate driving experience while only paying for the minimum displacement tax that the vehicle shipped as 'active'.

Later, software will be leaked to open up the more powerful modes that should have been enabled to start with.

[All in good fun of course...]

It's a good thing I have an engineering background and can understand the theory behind such technology. LOL!

2-6 mode will be unpleasant. (Think 'Harley'. If I have to explain it, you won't understand.)
4-4 is the limit that the discerning sporting enthusiast will tolerate. (Bahahaha!)
Cool thought to discretize the turbos, but simplicity will win and turbo count will not exceed 4.
Continuously variable displacement and compression ratio technology will put valvetronic in the history books. The efficiency gains of almost full time WOT with ultra-lean burn at light loads tempered with optional full-on performance tune will satisfy all but the luddites. (Bless their hearts.)

Is OK - just means it burns more oil, wait wait, it can already burn a lot depending on which owner you ask. (AND) They will improve upon the 'active engine dampening mounts' that Audi is now using so you will listen to synthetic Harley-ish sounds through the audio system.

Could always go the other way: 1 giant variable speed Turbo, with variable blow off valves and/or electronically controlled restricters per cylinder/bank.

Yes, but it will not manage the size of the combustion area by the stroke length / depth, instead it will change the circumference of the chamber purely on the basis of being a 'superior' technology. Of course this will require special Pistons that become a consumable and are always on back-order. Some argument about changing a curve effecting the volume capacity faster than adjusting the straight line will be kicked around in marketing material with an engineering spin.

And don't forget about the "in wheel" transmissions that can shift independently...

[again, all in good fun ]

What do u guys think about if they incorporate KERS and Active Aerodynamics (like the Ferrari 458) into the next M5?

A lighter chassis will be exactly what is needed, but I'm worried about their choice of next generation engine. I guess we'll have to wait and see what type of engine the next generation 550i will have so that way we will know the exact setup they are going to use on the next M5. Lol!

The KERS/AA would be cool if it remained integrated inside of the intake openings (like in the opening on the lower front bumper) but if they make it too aggressive and put them on the outward facing cheeks then I think it would look a bit poor.
