M5 Questions
Currently drive a 2011 550 and considering the upgrade to the 2014 M5. Had a few basic questions for the current M5 owners.
1. Is the chassis different/stiffer than the 550? 2. Are the fenders wider than the normal 5? 3. What type of real world gas mileage are you getting? Thanks in advance!

1. Yes. The subframe is directly bolted to the chassis without bushings. Also M specific suspension components are considerably more robust than a normal F10. Still a comfy ride
2. Only the front fenders are wider (slightly) 3. 16.5 mpg mixed driving. I have a heavy foot btw. E60 M5 had a small gas tank, so that was part of the reason it didn't have a good range.

about the No.3, I never owned an E60 M5, so I can't compare it with the F10. However, mine gets exceptional good gas mileage. It's almost unreal if you consider the power/weight of this car. The on board computer shows 775km/tank after refuel when I do long distance highway driving. Only problem I have is whenever this kind of number shows on my display, the orange CEL also appear. It goes away after I get back in city driving, I don't know why, maybe it has something to do with my BMC air filters, but I am not sure.

The M5 DCT is awesome but the PDK is too and IMO is the better transmission. The Nissan GTR also has a phenomenal dual clutch box.

Well if the issue with fuel consumption is not cost, but range, then I can say you will definitely have more range in the M5 than in your 550i thanks to the M5s larger tank.

Can you elaborate on this? Do you have statistics or facts that can prove it or is it all subjective? Not talking trash but I have had alot of DCT's (owned not just driven: M3, GTR, Porsche, M5, M6) and am trying to figure out how one can say that its MUCH better. Does it shift fast than the others... or does it have better software? (is software even considered part of the DCT or is the TCU)

Thanks for all replies. I had an M3 before and loved the M-DCT gearbox. Probably one of the main reasons I'm going to make the switch.
Has anyone done a long highway cruise in the M5? If so, what was your mileage. I'm in So Cal and want to know if I can at least get to Vegas on 1 tank (approx 350 miles).

the M5 and GTR both share the Getrag transmission. It is dual clutch, and having just come out of a GTR and test driven a 991 pdk, I can also attest that the getrag is currently the best right now.

"BorgWarner (BWA: BorgWarner Inc received a 2008 Global Innovation Award from Nissan in recognition of its innovative dual-clutch technology, used in the all-new 2008 Nissan GT-R. Launched in December in Japan and last month in the United States, the eagerly anticipated sports car is the first GT-R engineered for sale in global markets, the world's first longitudinal transaxle dual-clutch transmission, and the first Japanese transmission to feature BorgWarner's award-winning DualTronic® technology. " "To create the exhilarating experience drivers anticipate in a premier sports car, BorgWarner worked closely with Nissan and its affiliate, Aichi Kikai, designing the transmission to incorporate four BorgWarner advanced DualTronic® technologies including the dual-clutch module, clutch control module, shift actuation module, and synchronizer assemblies. BorgWarner manufactures these components at its facilities in Arnstadt, Germany; Tulle, France; and Margam, United Kingdom. " "Supported by manufacturing capacity at its facilities in the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, China and Mexico, BorgWarner expects to quadruple production of its dual-clutch technology over the next six years to 2.5 million dual-clutch transmission applications per year at full-launch of announced programs. I've driven the 991 pdk and previously owned a 2011 PTT. In my opinion, the PDK has better 'logic' about when to shift - as if it's psychic. Obviously, this is when driven in 'auto mode'. However, when driven in manual mode the DCT has faster shift times and is a better overall product (JMHO).
On a recent long drive I averaged 26.5mpg while on level ground - I was at sea level and was on cruise at 75mph. Once I went inland the mpg suffered a bit and I'd say that the average was around 22-24mpg depending on speed, etc. |
