Squirming
Hi guys
While I'm living with the weird grinding sensation of the wheel bearing in the hope that my local dealership will see to it in the next few days I just wanted to raise another matter. Do any of you experience the car squirming around trying to find traction when you really put your foot down. I'm not talking from a standstill but in fact from a decent pace on a dry surface. Yesterday I was driving the car quite grad and saw an open piece of road I was in 3rd gear and I put my foot down. The car took off but I felt it shuffle slightly with the traction control light flickering. It did it again in 4th gear at yet higher speed. Any views or cures would be great. |

Yes. Chassis has a challenge managing the torque and rear wheel drive doesn't help much either. Usually in 2nd or 3rd, certainly in 1st, wide open throttle will unsettle the rear end a bit. Very dependent on tire temp, pressure and road conditions. I've become accustomed to it but will never fully disengage the traction/stability control.
One thing I noticed - between 500miles and about 6000 miles, my Michelin PSS handled the task quite well but, despite plenty of tread, this issue became more noticeable between 6 and 9k miles. I recently had the rears replaced following a nail 'injury' to one of my rears and the car now feels much more planted. I wonder it the PSS's, despite adequate tread, lose a bit of stick with time - almost like the compound is different as the tire wears. Only cure I found is with throttle modulation. I dunno, maybe drop the pressure a bit and set the suspension to comfort? hope this helps.

I notice the same thing when it's cool outside. If the temperature is below 18'c I can feel the tires squirm. And let me tell you - I nearly cr@pped my pants the first few times it did it. Now that it's warmer outside I no longer feel it.

Yes! Its part of driving a rear engine muscle car with a nuclear bomb for an engine! Enjoy.

You make a good point. BMW engineering has stated that rear traction drops off significantly once the tires are beyond their half life. Expect rear tram-lining and squirming under acceleration. Temperatures below 40 degrees have a negative effect on traction as well, as the summer tires cannot find grip.

This may sound silly but I have 19's on my car. Would it help if I changed up to 20's. I know the contact patch would probably be the same but the increased diameter may help inertia.
Talking of tyres my Porsche has had a flat tyre for 10 days now and I am still waiting for this silly N1 rated Pirelli. I wouldn't buy conti's again as the tyres on my sls split without reason after 1000 miles with continental taking no responsibility. |

Just to be sure, check your tire pressures. I had a car delivered from the dealer with very low tire pressure once. It felt squirrelly until I fixed it.

Add rear wheel drive to the equation, and this only makes the issue more apparent! This issue is absent from the offerings from Audi and Mercedes in their all wheel drive variants. Oh, if only they would bring the RS6 to our side of the ocean, what happy days! Or they could add twin turbos to the current RS5, and I would be equally enthralled! Oh dear, what am I saying? By then all wheel drive will be available in the next generation M5, and I will certainly buy one and never look back! Is that about right Soooma? |
