The first drive acclaims for the 2012 M5 continue as Motor Trend posts their first take on the F10 M5. Calling it improved with age, like a bottle of fine wine, Motor Trend believes that the F10 M5 is better than the E60 M5 in every way. How's that? See some excerpts below.

That increases throttle response, reduces turbo lag, and improves efficiency.

It is also very forgiving. It doesn't get upset if you lift mid-corner. It gives you a bit of a wiggle, but is completely controllable. Speaking of lifting, the M5 makes the most beautiful bark when you lift off the throttle from high rpm while transitioning to braking. The brakes never fade, but I had to give firmer pressure than expected in hard-braking situations.

All that engineering, and they can't get rid of the turbo lag? What a waste! I don't care how fast or refined this new M5 is. "The Ultimate Driving Machine" is the one that responds when you want it to. That's what made the naturally aspirated engines so good. These turbos are a step backward for BMW. I say fix the lag, BMW, or go back to doing what you know.

I thought max boost was 21 psi (1.5 bar). That's the official figure quoted by BMW. 1.2 bar for the x5/6M.

I feel the exact same way... but the engine is a beast and I will accept that... I just hope and pray the M3 comes out more aggressive than what is being rendered

It's reviews like this that leave me confident in the new M's. Turbo's will be the future for all of them. But they will continue to be amazing beasts of power and handling.

You obviously don't understand the reason they had to go down the turbo route. With the stricter emissions and fuel mileage requirements, it's no longer possible to offer a high revving naturally aspirated engine at this time. Until such an engine can get better mileage with less emissions, expect to see more and more turbo engines.
