Before I got the 535 GT, I was looking at a 550 and test drove it a few times. However, I have now driven the 535 GT for almost a year now. Besides for the power, the normal road handling characteristics of the F 5 series is all very similar. Again, I have not taken my wife's car to the track, but in sport plus mode it handles better than my old X6 but not as well as her E60 528i. All told, you can feel the weight/mass of the F 5 series more than the E 5 series. The GTS hides the weight/mass better in my personal experience.

Again, I am positive that most people will experience this if they test drive both cars by pushing them slightly on some back roads or freeway on/off ramps.

I am not marginalizing the power difference between the cars. The M5 torque is CRAZY and the thrill of it is probably enough buying justification for 99% of the people who want and can afford this car.

The M5 traction is pretty amazing too. My passengers often can't believe the car stays on the road when taking corners.

You are comparing your test drives of the F10 550 about a year ago with your recent test drive of the 2013 M5.

I have the 2013 M5, and the F10 non M and M drive differently. Yes, they are both heavy, just as the Panamera is heavy. You even said that the M5 handles like the gran tourismo 535, which is totally off the mark.

Enjoyment of driving on a daily basis means much more to me than owning the better Nordschleife lap time, so I was already leaning a little toward the GTS. Reports of how the F10 M5 isolates one from the driving experience, even at illegal speeds, are a major concern. When I price how I would configure the M5 and the GTS, they are priced at $105,197 and $113,635, respectively. Not a deal breaking difference in my opinion. The Porsche will cost more to maintain, but the M5 more to feed. Compared to the pathetic range of my E60 M5, the 26+ gallon fuel tank in the GTS has appeal. I thought the E39 M5 was the perfect size, so I consider the F10 M5 and GTS equally too large. Some think the Panamera is a touch on the ugly side, but if the choice is about visual appeal, difficulty distinguishing the current 3, 5, and 7 series Bimmers apart on the road is equally problematic. Having folks mistake my M5 for a 3-series is a little too much stealth for me. Moreover, every Bimmer I've ever owned has eventually developed annoying rattles and squeaks, the only solution for which has been to turn on the radio too loudly. In my current M5, all door seals squeak in warmer weather, and there's an intermittent buzzing from somewhere in the dash area under acceleration that significantly violates the V10's melody. I've never heard anything but road, wind, and engine sounds in the six Porsches I have owned.
I don't see any "struggle" or any point in "struggling" get the GTS since your reliance is primarily on internet postings

And my alternative reliance would be on what? A drive around the block in each? If I just went ahead and bought both, there'd be no need for any third party opinions. ;=)

You guys need to relax. Everything I am saying is based on my subjective choice. I "feel" that the GTS "feels" smaller than the M5 at light sport street driving. On the street, I "felt" the M5 drove like a 550. Again, I do not drive overly aggressive and never take the car to the track. I just want to give my opinion to the OP on why I chose the GTS and how my choice related to the Motortrend opinions.

We are all car fanatics or we would not be posting on internet boards about $100K cars that we have bought or consider buying.

In the end, I felt 30 min test drives, reading stuff on the internet and a week of restless sleeping was enough for me to make my decision, which I am very happy with.

Make this easy, and buy the car you like it's your dime and your selections. The back of the Porsche has to grow on you like my old 2002 745i bangle butt. All in all you have to love it, and thats not a dig .....again you have to live with your 100k choice like the rest of us.

Guys! Guys! Porsche is more of a racing-oriented car manufacturer than BMW. But I have to say, the M division is losing what their cars have been praised for before: extreme agility and nimbleness. I hope that the F series Ms made so far will receive an LCI which makes steering better.

Given its size and weight I'd say the F10 is extremely agile and quite nimble.

I get rather confused why some buy the M5 and say it does not do this or that? I have owned several M cars, and I will say I'm very pleased. But one must understand a 4 door is not a track car unless you want to believe the hype on all of them. With that said it's the M5 is still the best on class when it comes to the track. The e39 was and is a great car, but I would never go back to it for the the F10 offers bottom line. If you own the M5 enjoy it, and if you don't you are like a reporter trying to get credit for a story not knowing the facts. Gee wiz

I am curious to see how the Audi RS7 will compare. I believe it is scheduled to debut in January.

Looks are subjective. I think the Panamera GTS provides a more dynamic and raw driving experience, while the M5 provides more outright thrust. Porsche have never been a good value, but at this price point, it shouldn't matter too much to prospective buyers.

My main concern with the M5 is traction. The car is simply under-tired given its weight and torque, and I am not sure how much room there is for wider rubber.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the correct comparison the M5 vs. the Panamera Turbo?

No the correct comparison should be M5 vs Panamera S. Because they are both $90k. The M5 even came with more options at this price.

The GTS is $110k
The Turbo is $136k
The Turbo S is $173k
