Just wondering if anyone on here is running some corn!
Maybe a nice 50/50 mix with a flash tune or jb4?

BMW Comment on lower octane fuel..."BMW engines are designed to run on 91 octane. All performance testing, including EPA emissions and fuel mileage, is done with 91 octane...their motors will run on 89 or 87 octane without damage... The knock sensors pull the ignition timing back and eliminate detonation. There will be a loss of power and a decrease in fuel mileage, but the size of the horsepower loss and the increase in fuel consumption depends upon many factors, such as ambient temperature, exact formulation of the fuel and driving technique, so BMW does not offer any estimates for operation on lower grade fuels...One not so obvious concern... is the type and quality of additives the gasoline companies include in the fuel. Premium gasolines may have better additive packages which are more effective keeping fuel systems (particularly injectors) clean and working efficiently, than those in regular grade fuels or off-brand products. Using lower octane or off-brand fuel could be degrading the fuel system over time, setting you up for a repair bill down the line.

E85 is actually a cheaper alternative to race gas and produces more safer power than 93 octane.

Didn't realize this..So should be good for performance gains?

ONLY if the car can adjust to the e85 real time.

Even though modern day cars (To include the M5) have the o2 trim authority to trim for the fuel, it is not real time. Real time means a physical sensor that dictates the Gasoline/ethanol mix before being injected or more specifically, the flexfuel sensor.

With that said, if the car supports it. E85 octane rating is about 100+. You will use more fuel than gasoline but it produces more power per lambda=.06 (yes yes, I know. more BTU in gasoline per gallon then Ethanol but you do not tuned to gallons, you tune to lambda and for the same lambda, Ethanol will produce more power than gasoline )

E85 is usually over 102 octane--Burns VERY fast

Thanks very interesting so if you were able to get e85 on an ongoing basis, what would be the optimal mix with pump gas?

30 - 50 miles on tank fill with 4 gallons e85 first then the rest with 93

Or if really low 10-12 miles 5 gallons e85 the rest 93 runs like a champ

Found a gas station selling FlexFuel, aka E85. How many gallons is optimal for a full tank of 91 octane?

I wouldn't run any more than 25% E85 without a E85 flash tune.

I run 75% 91 and 25% E85, runs like a raped ape!! With that mixture it bumps the octane up to 94.5-95 octane.

The M5 fuel tank is 21.1 gallons so just do the math depending on how much you are putting in.

I can safely run 4 gallons, then? I have jb4 bcm on 19-20 psi.

Thx

For sure 4 gallons is safe, that's only 20% to a full tank.

Just check your fuel trims and log HPFP pressure - if it stays solid keep increasing E85 until it starts dropping pressure. Symptom is cut-off in 5th gear around 5K RPM.

My station with e85 seems to have changed their rating so now I've had to adjust from the last time we talked. I've found this mixture so far does wonders with no fuel drops.

.5gl e85 / 5gl 93

I'll start with 2.1 (10% per M6beast) gallons and move up while I log runs. 5th gear 5k rpm is about 145mph

RPiM5 , where in San Diego County can we 'test' or log the Jb4 safely with minimal chance of getting our car impounded by Johnny Law?
