Of course that was for charity too, which is a good thing, but if you want to say he was dumb for overpaying, the corvettes seem like the ones to whine about.
Rick made a vast amount of his Billion based on Chevy. He wanted to own the very first production models ever for the stingray.

Actually, I would beg to disagree.

All wealthy, successful businesses/business people care about minimizing taxes. There are often business strategies built around this.

700k is practically a rounding error on his net worth. This was for CHARITY and Rick does massive amounts of charity contributions every year. Some people just write a check, others GROSSLY over pay for a car in the name of charity. If you ask me it's a double win, he gets a car, charity gets a fat check.
This stuff is in a different league the price of the car is not really the point. And its for Charity so at least its for something good and he will receive a tax deduction for it so win win.

It would be soooo stupid if it would have been the last one.

But it's not

Always check on the swiss market when a model is said to be sold out. We had 1M's, M3 GTS and now this beast when they were said to be sold out worldwide...

I am pretty sure he does. How do you think large corporations make some much profit, when you have certain companies paying zero corporate tax it adds up to a lot. Sure this is one $700k instance but its added into a bunch of other ones.

That is not accurate at all. He can fully deduct the difference between the amount he paid and the value of what he received. It is not binary.

"This baby's going to go right beside the i8 in the museum. The only miles it's going to get are in the truck (sending it from Arizona to North Carolina.)"

What a waste

Kind of like getting psyched over putting a stuffed cheetah in your living room, or getting a stunner girlfriend and committing to never touch her for the sake of admiring her.

Think of it as whoever donates the most to the charity wins the car, not like just buying a car. The only unfortunate thing about this is this M5 won't get driven as much as it should.

+1. They didn't auction it off because he couldn't buy one somewhere else for FAR less money. It's like getting a cookie or a pen or whatever for donating blood....

He's better off writing a check. He can't deduct it because he got something in return. I understand the whole charity thing but the only person who can deduct is whoever donated the car. The purchaser cannot deduct from their taxes.
Not everyone donates to charity solely for the tax write off. If he has that kind of money, I'm sure he doesn't care about the tax savings.

This. I don't understand that hate. This situation is akin to paying $5,000 for a table at a fundraiser. Obviously the food isn't worth $5,000, but it's a fundraiser for a charity.

The people on this board need to get a grip.

He just bought a $700,000 tax write off, and got a boat load of publicity for it. Well played. Hats off to you sir!
