Nice shot, Jeff. Did you get caught in that nightmare on Lake Shore and decide to make use of your extra time?

Thanks! And thanks! I've messed around w/ a few font based ones and this one kind of stuck. I blame the punk rock. This pic is actually my new wallpaper at home and work now. It's looks better in a larger size IMO (fewer compression artifacts).

Thanks, guys. Naw, Mark, I wasn't part of that fiasco. Actually, my commute on Tuesday night wasn't any different than my regular morning commute. My strategy isn't typically to beat the storms that go thru, but to wait out the traffic caused by all the people leaving early to beat the storms. It usually works pretty well. I actually shot this just after xmas last year. Tim will be impressed that I used a tripod, too. It was kind of disappointing, though, because it was like a 0 F wind chill with something like 20mph winds (I think...it's been a little while) and I caught a cab just to take a winter night shot of the skyline from the Shedd......and it was frickin' foggy around the city. The pix look better in BW, trust me.

Ashu, you're going to make me look at the EXIF data?! Sheesh...

^^^That is Al-Faw(Water) Palace in Baghdad, Iraq. I just went around 3:00am (GMT+3) to take this photo (our PX finally got some decent cheap tripods in...I was so excited to be able to use it...LOL). The second shot is of the mosque for the palace resort area.

BTW I am having an issue that is slightly frustrating....any suggestions for low-light focusing in manual? The AF obviously will not work with the lens I am using (kit)...I also just ordered my f/1.8 50mm today so I hope to play with that in the coming weeks....

the 50mm 1.8 isn't the best long range lens. it does a great job for portraits and stuff.

however, i have not shot mine at night, so maybe with darker colors, sharpness may not be an issue.

as for focusing, do you have a camera with live view? if so, you can digitally zoom to 10x and it will help with any focusing either manual or auto focus. Also try to find something with a strong line of contrast and aim at it.

it may also help to set the camera to a single point auto focus and just aim that single point at an area easiest for the camera to pick up, especially since the middle point is the strongest

Yeah I am waiting to get my other lens for long range stuff. I ordered the f1.8 just yesterday so I don't have it yet. I used the kit lens to take the two shots above. The body I have doesn't have digital zoom (at least I dont think the 1000D has it...)

you have live view?

it's not actually digital zoom, it's just a zoom on live view to allow for more precise focusing, but it doesn't actually take the picture that way.

you know the FE-L and the * and the other botton on the top right?

go in live mode and hit the one on the far right and it should zoom you in when you're in live mode.

then it will be easier to manual focus.
