Question Engine sound?

Still trying to get used to my car and I'm curious what others think about this one.

Ahem, how to say this, I don't seem to be able to hear the engine sound in this car. Is the engine too quiet? Is it specific to M5 or all turbo cars are like this one? If I go full throttle, past 4000rpm, I hear turbos whining.

Where I'm coming from is, in the old M3, you could hear 2 things. The exhaust and the engine. Both were very distinct separate sounds.

So listen to this, especially the exterior engine sounds towards the middle of the video:

You hear how it's just the engine that's making that noise?

Now listen to this, it's just wind, barely an engine running there:

Am I missing anything? Maybe I need to be educated. Is the new M3 the same way?

So you are new to the forum here and there are plenty of threads about this. Part of the issue is NA vs. Turbo and then there is your sock exhaust. You aren't going to get as much sound from the Turbo but you can add an AM exhaust system for better sound. I have a Dinan exhaust catback and it sounds good enough for me. It's not crazy loud like that M3 but that is boy racer sound and that's not me.

However, BMW has piped in engine noise to the cabin for you to hear, don't you like it? LOLOLOL!

Here is my car with Dinan Freeflow

Then without, just before the install

If you play both videos at the same time you can hear the difference. The OEM exhaust is a higher pitched sound, the Dinan has more bass in it and has more sound in general. It is definitely louder because I was on the back deck the other morning when my wife drove it back from tennis and I could hear it from down the street. I didn't know what it was at first and then I realized it was my car.

The camera was closer on the stock video. It's the exhaust note that sounds different if you play the two at the same time. Try to sync them up from when I get in the car and start it up (around 14 seconds on the videos). The car goes through that initial 1200 rpm warm up and I rev it to about 3000 in there in both videos. It won't let you rev higher until it drops the idle back to 800, then you can let loose but I didn't do that on the stock video. My neighbors agree that the new exhaust is louder.

How can an exhaust introduce or create a missing engine sound? There is no sound coming from under the hood!!!! All I hear is wind. I even sticked my head out of the window when my wife was driving!

Ah sorry...didn't read the thread properly. Answer: Turbo - nothing but intake noise. Should have purchased an E60

Well color me stupid or deaf but the only engine sounds I ever heard from under the hood were either bad, i.e. knocking or intake which is nothing more than a sucking sound. What is it that you think you are missing?

I have the aftermarket BMW performance exhaust system and I'm very happy with it.
