Now lets be clear about what's going on.

Mark -

A: the waste gates are operating the same way they did out of the factory and the downpipes are simply amplifying the sound. or -

B: the waste gates are not operating the same way they did stock. perhaps the extra exhaust flow is causing the waste gates to rattle and ultimatly malfunction.

?
Hey Alpha,

I got my Meisterschaft GTC installed at 1200 miles. I do not remember hearing any rattling at all before that time. After installation of the cat-back exhaust, I did note hearing some rattling in the 900-1200rpm range as the car was transitioning to idle. It was gone at idle.

After installing downpipes, this sound became amplified. I can hear it while driving at all speeds (most revs below 4000rpm; above that exhaust dominates all) always when revs are coming down (decelerating). This happens at all engine temps. I feel like there are two places it occurs. Coming down off revs, then it sort of goes away, but then returns just as the car is coming down to idle (coasting). Either way, it is louder, annoying and making me consider removing the downpipes. I have read it could either be a turbo/wastegate issue or just the actuators. I am going to take my car in next week to have them look at that specific issue.

Hi Mark - I won't speculate on something I haven't heard in person but, it sounds like something is loose - perhaps a clamp or heat shield.

Maybe even fitment issues from downpipe to Meisterschaft GTC.
Let us know once you get things checked out.

Anyone else having similar issues with their downpipes?

I know, agree and hear everything you are describing.. mine does it even at idle too, it's very annoying. If it didn't do it at idle I would be Ok with it. Others don't hear it as much.. mine happens to be on the loud side. It's a total buzz kill because it sounds like the car has a loose exhaust or something. Mine is currently at the dealer.. its Def the wastegates but I don't know how it could be minimized... maybe possibly replace the waste gates?? I love the sound and benefits of the DP's but the wastegates have to be addressed somehow because I definitely don't want to have to remove my DP's because I like them a lot. I am also baffled as to why some hear it louder than others.

Hey Hunter,

Let me know what the dealer has said and done, and if you get some resolution. I'm dropping my car off this weekend for a week so surely they'll find something.

Just curious...what is the build date for your '13 M6? Mine is 8/12 I believe.

Hey Alpha,

I'm sure what you say is possible. My installer (builds porsches) thought it was the wastegate or actuator as you can see the actuator closing as revs come down (as is supposed to happen). However, the noise and actuator closing could just be coincidental.

Sorry about this, I'm not sure how I didn't see this message. I fixed my issue, it was the donut gasket. I have zero rattle now. My build date was 7/12.

Well, it was thought to be a wastegate rattle.. that's what I was told by my dealer and a couple other techs from other shops. They even recommended I change out the wastegates and turbos because one tech told me it might be a blade on one of the turbos that was causing it. I heard all that and was like WTF?? I couldn't believe it. So after presenting my case to AMS and told them what was going on and how others had similar issues they asked me to bring my car in to go over it and that is when they discovered it was the donut gasket flopping around because it either lost its shape or the DP's weren't installed exactly right. I was relieved to say the least. I can't believe my dealer who did the install couldn't find that out after going there specifically for that issue multiple times.

The only proof I have that my rattle is actually the wastegates was my local shop guy basically held the wastegate open with a screwdriver and had me rev it. The rattle disappeared. This was after having DP gasket replaced. It is one WG louder than the other. I have yet to bring it to dealership 2/2 time and waiting for oil change time (and of course other things for them to look at....Seat rattle, door lock rattle, B&O rattle, B&O center speaker creaks when opening and closing now, front wheel bearings, etc). So I'd imagine I might be without my car for awhile. Of course, I'll post results when it's all said and done.

I heard the wg's the same way as you are describing. I wonder what amplifies the sound after you upgrade the downpipes.

Less resistance allows the wg to open easily. The backpressure is what keeps them closed according to my tech

You have to get new ones. Old ones won't work since they are the kind that gets smashed
