2013 M5 Not liking the cold weather (engine/transmission)

This is my first winter with the new car.
I haven't been able to keep my car warm and toasty over night yet and the outside temperature here is now approaching freezing (and will be tonight).
What I'm noticing is that engine/transmission is really very jerky before the car warms up (about 15-20min later). When I take my foot off the gas the car immediately wants to slow down rapidly and this is even in the efficient setting. During deceleration and when the car naturally downshifts the car surges during the transition which is really really noticeable.
I haven't felt this 'jerkyness' in my cars since the early nineties. Is this normal?
Just to give you a bit of history, I've never had a car so powerful before (last was an Infiniti G35x), never had a car with turbo's before, never had a car with DCT.
Any insight would be helpful, I don't want to go to the dealership and cry wolf.

I do not own a m5 but have the 650GC. I do notice some harsh shifts when the engine or lets say the transmission is cold, but I did not get it on my old x6.
Personally, I think the issue is related with the v8 engines e.g N63tu and s63tu.
Some members on 6post suggest the harsh shifts for ZF 8 speed auto tansmission is normal when the transmission is cold. DCT shifts faster but harsher is also for sure.
For me, once you warm up the car and it shifts normal, it should be ok.
Just my 0.000000002 cents.

If this is your first DCT, don't worry, it's not the cold weather. That how the transmission behaves and you will get used to it very soon.

I am still thinking it the cold weather as the shifts have been great for the past two months before the temperature dropped.

First gear will give a harsher decel.

1. Do you experience the same decel / jerk in 2-7 that you do in 1?

2. How long have you had the car? Have you driven it in ~warm weather before (55 deg f+)? Did it behave the same way as now?

I've had it 2 1/2 months (2900km), but the problems only started this week. I can feel the difference all the way to 5th gear. In fact I could swear I feel two surges per gear change almost like I can feel one clutch engage and then about a second later the other disengage. As for starting out in first I felt it bunny hop where you almost feel the engine stall, like someone learning to drive stick for the first time.

My LCI M5 this week has been used close to freezing in the mornings, NO problems at all, my only complaint is these cars take way too long to warm up in any temperature
Mine typical 10 miles before it's shows temp out of town driving.
The diesels warm up much quicker.

Mine does not exhibit this behavior apart from the occasional slight jerkiness from 2nd into 1st when very cold. I do have 15K miles on the car though.

Does the same issue happen in D1? In D1 is it better, worse, or about the same?

If it behaves better in D1, drive it in that mode until you have a chance to bring the car in.

Based on your responses to my questions, I would say that it's not normal behavior, and you should bring the car to a BMW dealer for diagnosis.

It could be something simple or it could be more severe. No one has reported an issue like this before.

I agree, the trans is a bit rough in low temps.
Last year I drove mine a few times in sub zero temps and it is pretty jerky until it warms up.

My E60 has a tendency to do the same thing in the cold, but only until about 20 mph. If I get in at the train station after a cold day, she will do a little stutter step in first.

I live pretty close and can't say there are any issues that I would report back to BMW. I spend a lot of time in Whistler where it was about -5C last weekend. The engine sound is harsh for the first minute or so but gets back to "normal" before you know it. My 911 was the same (maybe a bit more of a delta). There's no appreciable difference with respect to gear changes. The only noticeable difference in cold weather is the obvious loss of traction and the ride is stiffer for sure.

BMW does an extraordinary amount of cold weather testing so that the M5 performs the best it can in severely cold environments.

The loud engine tone for about under one minute is normal upon cold starts.

The OP's issue seems to be uncharacteristic and I would bring it in for a diagnosis and read-out.

Just went for another run, but the temperature is at 7.5'c and all is well and I hope it stays that way otherwise I'll be going into the dealership.
Thank you everyone for sharing their experiences. It would seem the past couple of days the cars attitude is different from others.

I find it can be a bit sluggish when it's cold, but for me anyways, it goes away in the first minute or so. I also always drive on S3 with the most direct throttle response, so, I am also pretty adjusted to any sort of jerkiness on downshifting.

Does your car feel like it's having any control issues or is it just slightly less smooth? Might be an indication of another problem.

I do find that if it's cold enough outside (say, below -30) the gear changes can be extremely slow until the transmission warms up.

I haven't noticed the cold affecting my old 2012 banger, but we'll see next week when the forecasted snow arrives (tho' I'll probably too focussed on keeping it on the road with the summer rubber)

At "the old banger".
Seriously though, did the London run again last night in all that rain and drizzle, the winters just gripped and went, summers would be "loose", be careful on them.

Yeah, it's starting to feel a bit slippy now, which does make driving the beast a bit, ahem, interesting:
