Pilot Super Sports vs. Pilot Sport Cup 2
After 23,000 miles, my PSS's are need of replacement, but according to Michelin, they do not have a set of 19" front tires in the entire country, and they do not know when they might get more. So their recommendation was to get Pilot Sport Club 2 instead, a tire that costs more and wears more quickly. I am curious how others are handling this issue. My car is used as a daily driver rather than a track car, so the extra track performance of the Sport Cup 2 are not much benefit to me. It seems to me that BMW and Michelin should better support the PSS's for 19" wheels.

Do you have a winter wheel set or second car? In NY you'll use these for about 3-4 mos out of the year. The cups are sticky and one of the best track tires out there in dry weather. But, you said it. They're soft hence wear quickly. I lived in NY most of my life and unless you have a second set of rims/tires forget it. Rain? Forget it. Cold? Forget it. Snow? Well, you know what I mean. Waste of money.

I emailed tirerack to ask them if they could help with rear traction on my m5, they responded a 305mm tire might help a little but their final recommendation was to switch to the sport cup 2 as it is grippier in the dry.

That's probably because you didn't have your remap before..

The world will not end if this guy has to drive in a downpour on Cup2/Super sports to the local outback because he's craving a bloomin' onion, if its -1 degrees out and theses tires are rock hard [I've done that too], or if he takes it out a day or two after roads have been cleared. Its 100% fact that the Cup2 will wear even faster, would perform even more inadequately in adverse conditions especially snow/ice vs. the PSS, but if the OP is being careful these will be FINE. But on the flip side summer driving will be even more ideal then the PSS, you'll probably still blow the tires off 1st and part of second if you have any kinda tune+downpipes but they are even more effective than the PSS in summer applications. dedicated winter is idle but lets remember most of us have a brain and aren't going to go looking for a race in adverse conditions on summer tires. |

Just been to the tire store to replace my rears after 6100 miles... This remap produces so much torque!
On this Michelin Sport Cup 2's.. these are classed as high performance street and track tires. versus Pilot Super Sports being classed as high performance road tires.. bit like the Pirelli Corsa tires vs P Zero Neros which are simply high performance tires.. I got the impression that the difference could be material but I dont think I will fit the more sticky tires as Im going 305/30/20.. The Sport Cups and the Pirellis Corsas cost a shed load more than the PSS and Pirelli P Zeros..

PSS Update
Just heard from my tire shop, and a new batch of PSS's have been made and are now available. So, if like me, you have been waiting to replace you PSS's, now is the time.
