Exclamation Busted my dad's rear windshield. Could really use some help

Hey guys
Words can not explain how guilty I feel right now.
Was about to go out with a friend to grab some food and hit up someones house. My parents had left town and I decided to take my family's Toyota Sienna out to make sure the battery doesn't die out while they're gone.

Unfortunately as I was backing out, one of the branches off a tree that I failed to see went straight through the rear windshield and punctured the tail light cover. Probably one of the scariest noises I've heard as the window shattered. It's a huge mess right now and pics are below.

The crappy thing is my sister did the same thing less than a month ago, but only the tail light was replaced. I just feel so down right now, especially since my dad takes so much care of his belongings even though it's his secondary car. My parent's will be back in a little after 2 weeks, and I want to get this fixed up as soon as possible.

I just graduated high school so I'm tight on cash especially after blowing it on my car, but I do work for a BMW dealership and have been after I got my car. Should of bought the BMW after I got the job as I would of saved a ton of cash but that's another story.

Could you guys point me in the right direction in how to handle this without it being too costly? Should I order parts online? Does anyone know any good places to get this work done or should I just go to Toyota?
Anyone have a rough estimate on the cost?

Thanks for looking

First off, tell you dad straight up what you just told us.

Then, tell him you're going to make it right before he gets back. If you don't think he will find out, you're naive in my book.

I would head to Safelite and talk to one of the techs there to see what they can do for you as far as costs are concerned with the rear window. As far as the taillight goes, maybe try a junk yard???? I don't see any alternative besides finding an OEM one, new or used.

600-1200 bucks???

No, wouldn't my rates go up? I think my deductible would make it not worth it, but I will call them to make sure.

Of course I'm going to tell him. I just feel crappy about the damage. Junk yard is a good idea I think. Do these tail lights have to be replaced flat out or are they just covers? Thanks

Since you're in TX, there are plenty of junkyards around. I recommend searching for one with the same gen. sienna in the same color and buying the tailgate. No good idea on price, ~600-700? They're sold complete so you'll get a replacement tail and would have parts left over from yours to make some of the money back.

Definitely tell your dad. Some insurance policies are very lenient with glass.

I'm guessing 300-500$ if you buy used. Here's some help. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-Toyota-Sienna-OEM-Lift-gate-Tailgate-Glass-/250815420354?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &fits=Make%3AToyota%7CModel%3ASienna&hash=item3a65 c397c2&vxp=mtr
Edit: right taillight is $85 on eBay...

I would say wait a bit and set an appointment to get the windshield replaced at one of those glass replacing shops for the week after your father returns. If you've saved enough to pay, pay for it. If not, tell him you'll pay him back as soon as you can. You taking the initiative will probably get him to pay.

Don't know about Texas, but most states have no deductible (mandatory) or a very low one for glass replacements. Also, your insurance shouldnt go up for glass claims. I would replace the glass thru insurance. Glass replacement isn't something you should do yourself. As for the tail light, find an oem replacement on ebay or a junkyard and replace it yourself.

Oh, do tell your dad, but do so a day before he comes home. If you tell him now, it would totally ruin his trip.

Yeah, +1 on cutting the tree.

And if you can't pay for it, have him pay to get it fixed and pay him back over time as you earn the money.

say you were medically induced and you realized that his car was vandalized in the morning.

then see what pisses him off the most, you being high or the window broken.

sit back and enjoy the reactions, either way you will be in trouble, so have a bit of fun at your dads expense.

Tell him, cut the branch, take full responsibility for the actions and own up to it like a man.
Offer to pay for it on a monthly basis and you should be good
