Next-generation BMW M5 to get all-wheel drive

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but confirmed on AutoExpress

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/900...ll-wheel-drive

Didn't take the Ex-Audi RS boss long then!

Damn. Thanks for the article. I think this is big news.

I just hope they make it optional or at least do a hybrid setup where the 2 front wheels are driven by electric motors.

It almost won't matter for me personally, because if M decides to stick the exact same Inverted Twin Turbo V8 setup or some sort of 6 cylinder engine in the next M5, I'm jumping ship to Lamborghini. Ah, I'll probably jump ship anways, I don't want another car that is bigger than an F10. Lol!

An AWD M5 will be great for Canadian and Northern U.S. Customers though and we can't deny the performance of the Audi RS7 with it's bone stock 0-60 time of just 3.2 seconds.

The next M5 will may be a revolution in Sports Sedans given the technology that might exist 5 years from now. So I can imagine a 4 door sedan weighing ~3,900lbs, 600hp, and AWD, utilizing an Tri-Electric Turbo V8 engine with hybrid electric motor assist for the two front wheels and a small battery pack, it will be one fast sedan.

But yeah, I miss that sound / feeling of an NA V-10 and Lamborghini may be the only ones still making them 5 years from now.

Dude, you know I've been outta the closet for forever. My blood is Blue and White more than most. I just can't imagine me straightpiping an Inline 6 Cylinder engine in the next M5. It will sound like shit and the sound of a car is as equally important to me as performance, except when it is meant to have no sound. Like the i8, puny 3 cylinder engine that makes no sound, but it's all good because it's not an M car and I'd still love to own one.

So what you are saying is that the m3/m4 sounds like $hit?

Up here in NE Ohio....i'm dying for an AWD M5!! My '13 F10 has only 3800 miles because i can only drive it 5 months out of the year and 2 of those 5 its slippery roads with no traction anyways from all the salt they put on the roads in the winter here. I've been looking hard at the RS7 lately but would much rather have an AWD M5 any day!

That V-10 will be a collectors item. One with low miles I predict will be like the Z8. But I fear with the Euro emission laws coming to play over the next 5 years even the lambos will have to step down from the V-10....

I like the idea, although I do hope there's a choice. I just can't imagine having more HP/torque without it and the car not being called an M5 Hellcat. I also hope they don't just stick in an X-drive system and this is new tech, so to speak.

Look to the i8 for where BMW is going. I would expect something like the motor in the M3/4 powering the rears with an electric motor powering the fronts.

There is absolutely no way there will be a straight 6 in the next M5. I got no idea where that came from but I guarantee it. They have already said they plan to increase power and torque. I don't think they can achieve that with a 6. And they aren't going to let Cadillac sit pretty with 640hp leading the market. I assure you the next M5 will have a smaller than 4.4l twin turbo V8 with >650hp and >600lb ft and it will do it in a package under 4000lbs.

So long as the electric motors are in the front and can be turned off via a switch. So you can have rear wheel drive or all wheel drive based on what your M button is set to.
