Extended Warranty and Maintenance
Hey all,
For those of you who are planning on owning the 2013 M5 for more than 4 years, how many people are getting the extended warranty and extended maintenance? Also which ones did you pick (6 yrs/100 k vs 7 yrs/70 k) and what were the reasoning behind your choices? Also, Extended Warranty has 3 different levels, highest one being the platinum plan which covers everything including the electronics such as B&O System, and which one did you all settle for if at all? Lastly how much are you guys paying for these? Thanks in advance for your inputs and your responses will help me greatly! Last edited by puffysheep; 07-19-2012 at 05:30 AM.. Reason: Typo |

Hmm... I guess most people are not getting the extended warranty and maintenance?
I usually get extended maintenance but not the extended warranty. For those who had experience with extended warranty, is it worth it in your opinion? Once again, thanks for your inputs! |

I had the BMW extended warranty Platinum on another car and was unfortunately unhappy with it. Many things were excluded as 'wear & tear' items. I was able to get a partial refund.

I'm actually contemplating the same thing and was hoping to see some more discussion on the topic of extended warranty options via BMW. I have used EasyCare warranties on 2 of my past BMWs and have been very happy with them. They are pricey, but worth the money for the piece of mind.

I am thinking of getting one. What's the difference between extended warranty and extended maintenance? I thought extended warranty covered extended maintenance, i.e. it extends the 4-year/50 miles to 6 or 7 years. Although, I trust the Germans for anything mechanical, I have doubts about their electronics as I perceive the Japanese are better in it, as such I want some sort of guarrantee that if any of the electonics in the car fails that it gets replaced/fixed without question.

Some people like to be able to finance it

And if for one of many reasons you don't own the car in four years? I know you love it but think of waiting to buy as the passive equivalent of a pre- nup- love can fade.

It's best to wait until the initial 4 years are up. A lot of things can happen to the car in the first 4 years that can change your mind about keeping it. It is my understanding that you can finance it after the 4 years anyways.
That's why I lease these cars for 3 years, it is always cheaper than financing. And once the 3 year honeymoon is over I look for a new bride, and start the romance all over. |

One other advantage of getting the extended warranty and maintenance now other than being able to finance is that you can negotiate the price down.
If you try to get these later, you have to pay the MSRP for these service extensions. And those who already shared your perspectives on this issue, I sincerely thank you for your inputs. I still would like to hear some more opinions since my decision on these services is still unsure. Once again, thanks in advantage for your inputs. Just seeing what people decided to do. At time of purchase I was quoted around $2200 for the Extended Service Contract (Warranty) and $4000 for the extended Maintenance.
The finance person said that getting the brakes/rotors changed alone will be around $3500, so it makes sense to get the Extended Maintenance. And he said as I approach the end of the standard 4 year/50K, the price will shoot up to $9K if I wanted the Extended Maintenance. What did you guys opt to do?

I decided not to buy extended warranty and maint.
I had that before on my MB. But i ended up selling the car earlier than factory warranty expiration. Getting refund is a hassle. So i just stopped.

Warranty
I paid $5500 for a platinum extended warranty for 6 years and 100k. Since I was planning to keep it over 50k miles, I didn't want to drive it without a warranty. My finance guy started out quoting $6200 for the warranty. I would love to know what other people are being quoted.

Have you considered to self insure?
Just take the money you were planning to spend on the warranty and invest it in a low cost index fund? I do this for all these kinda of things(though I Usually lease my vehicles). It's amazing after a few years how this money can really add up. Just food for thought |
