New Details Emerge on the next gen G30 5-Series and next M5
I'm guessing that the next 5-Series are going to be the:
530i - Featuring the B48 engine (4cyl turbo) and it sounds like it may be combined with an electric motor for a hybridized more fuel efficient version than what today's N20 528i is. 540i - Featuring the B58 engine (6cyl single turbo). Maybe delivering that 349hp and 368lbs/ft of torque. 540d? - An all new diesel engine with 486lbs/ft of torque, sign me up! 560i? - Featuring an all new BMW engine. Sounds like it could be a Quad Turbo Inline 6 or V8, but with 402hp and 553lbs/ft of torque, this sounds kind of sketch to me. Why would BMW introduce a new engine that makes less horsepower than the current N63tu but a crap load more torque, which is more than today's F10 M5. Gxx M5 - Sounds like the next M5 may use the same setup as today's F10 M5, a reverse flow Twin Turbo V8 but with more power and more torque. They are speculating 617hp. I wonder what the torque numbers will be though. Also it is hinted again, that an AWD version may be available. Time will tell, but I'm still holding out for that all new V10 engine that Scott26 was hinting about. Looks like no new word about weight diets on all of the cars though. It does sound like the next 5-Series and especially M5 are going to be Uber-Luxurious. http://www.gtspirit.com/2014/08/27/n...ld-have-617hp/ "New details about the next-generation BMW 5-Series, set to arrive in 2016 have emerged and if proven correct, the new luxury sedan will be a revolutionary leap over the current model. First and foremost, German publication Autobild believes that the BMW 5-Series will adopt semi-autonomous driving technology. This is quite important because the range-topping BMW 7-Series doesn’t yet feature such tech, and it would give BMW a leg-up over its main rivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Elsewhere, it is speculated that the interior of the 2016 BMW 5-Series will be thoroughly improved over the existing car with it to set “new standards in terms of surface quality and material appearance”. On an engine front, a small 2.0-litre four-cylinder joined with an electric motor will likely act as the entry-level hybrid version. It will be joined by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol delivering 349 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. A diesel of the same capacity will also be offered with it producing 341 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque. A brand new quad-turbocharged engine with 402 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque could be on the cards. Finally, the range-topping BMW M5 is likely to retain its existing twin-turbo V8 but is pinned to be upgraded to deliver about 617 hp. It may also be available with all-wheel drive for the first time."

So a 7% increase in rated HP vs my Competition Pack 575HP?...meh. Given what is going on in the broader marketplace, meh. However, get the weight 10% lower (sub 4,000lb?) and I think M might have a shot at a great car vs the next set of competitors. How to get that power down and improve power/weight by 15-20%? That is the challenge. Success rides or falls on this central question in my mind.
I can't even imagine how one integrates "semi-autonomous" into an M car. The two concepts could not be further apart unless it is maybe bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic. |

So right now we are pretty much guaranteed that we will have a Gxx M5 with more power and a curb weight of not more than 4167lbs. Also we will learn a heck of a lot more about the next generation 5-Series architecture when the next generation 7-Series is unveiled soon. BMW has already stated that the next 7-Series will be lighter than today's F10 5-Series. This is also the reason why the ///M7 is coming.

if they going to keep exact same engine for next generation m5, just increased HP that means m5 would have had same engine for 12 years straight... doesnt look promising

Pure speculation at this point, anything can happen to change all this, the only factor that will remain credible is the weight saving IMO.

Exactly. I agree. M Division has never done that before with the exception of the X5M and X6M. I highly doubt that the same configuration engine will carry over from generation M5 to the next.

Maybe they see the engine being that good. I mean why get something completely new if the current one works.
Good power, decent mpg, nice torque curve and most of all exciting to drive. Just my $0.02

I hope bmw keep it as a real driver's car. People who want AWD can just go to those other brands. |

617hp sounds too low, the 30th anniversary M5 has 600hp.
With the power output of the next M5 I guess 4 wheel drive will be mandatory. My M550d only comes with X-drive, I guess the massive torque would have been a handful with just rear wheel drive. Also heard a 3 cylinder engine would be available for the new 5, probably a down rated i8 unit, and any 5 with less than 200hp would be 3 cylinders. |

That's just not true. AWD is an option on the E63, but I don't think you can get an AWD on any of the other AMGs (except for the SUVs).

The M5 will prob not be available until 2017 model year. Still plenty of time before I need to get something new. Definitely looking forward to the new M5 but also looking to see what the new E class will look like and its AMG version.

I for one will cross my fingers for the option of AWD. I understand the viewpoint of the people who want to retain a RWD experience, but I live in the northeast and last winter was brutal. I ended up canceling my order earlier this year due to the fact that there was no way I was going to get around with a RWD M5 last winter. My original plan was to get a beater car/truck for snow days, but I'm only allowed parking for 1 car in my buildings garage. Having a AWD option on the M5 would come in handy for may of us I believe.

Albert Biermann stated on the possibility of offering AWD for the next-gen M5 (since the current F10 platform for the current M5 cannot accommodate an AWD drivetrain.....and that it's already too late to implement it for the current gen) Next-gen M5 would be a possibility though I suspect it will be an option. With that said, an AWD model may help sales of the car especially in areas with ice and snow such as the USA North East as well as Northern Europe and Russia On my end, I just hope that BMW doesn't screw up on the exterior and interior design of the next M5. I mean, the F10 M5 raised the bar real high for the current 5 series........so I just hope that it won't look ugly compared to the current model (like what happened to the Z4) Oh and PLEASE NO SIX CYLINDER. BMW, please do not give in to those left-wing extremist politicians as well as those eco-terrorist hippies from Greenpeace. |

The best thing that could ever happen to the M5: give its v10 back.
