Buying from out of state - timing on docs?

I live in California and leased a new car from a dealer in Illinois. As part of the fees I paid some third party registration company in Colorado to take care of the paperwork and registration in California. It's been a month and I've yet to receive anything related to registration. The dealer just keeps telling me that these things take time! Anyone have any idea how long this should take?

I have never leased the way you did yours. What I would do is contact CA DMV and explain your situation and give them your vin number. They should have the answers you are after.

I'll answer my own question - 5 weeks. Just got the docs and spent almost 2 hrs at the DMV getting the car registered.

Just bought mine yesterday out of state. Dealer is taking care of everything, will update how it goes. I was surprised how easy the process was and the expectation is I'll pick up license plates from the closest DMV ones they arrive.

License plates and all papers arrived 13 days after the purchase. Great experience with Kuni BMW of Portland!

just out of curiosity, why did you have a 3rd party do it and not the dealer? I usually get my cars out of state, dealer takes care of everything for me

It was probably imposed on him by dealer. Given international price arbitrage opportunities, dealers have to be seen as trying their best to not sell cars to overseas export buyers (as this is something BMW would punish as a violation of their franchise agreement). Insisting a third party registers the car and not yourself, is one way that a dealer can reduce this risk. Most dealers don't have such policies but I have encountered a few that do.

it can take upto 6 weeks which is not unusual
third party because dealers used to mess up paper work and customers get mad. now they do third party so it take them off the hook and they make a cut on the fee . a win win for them

Do California people have to pay additional tax on out of state tax? Or are the taxes the same?

Mine was a lease, so only paying CA tax on the monthly payment. No other taxes. The DMV tried to charge me ~$10k tax as if it were an out of state purchase, but they were confused.
