Stock air intake box

My shop was checking the intake box and he said mine was odd as it has
a open hole in the bottom. He called me yesterday and said he got another M5 in and he sent me a picture of a box with a metal plate at the bottom.
Does anyone know why there's 2 different types? Do you think the factory just made a mistake on my car?

Hey what's up Fly?!

This is the first I've heard of this. Interesting find. I'm sure the BMW engineers will have to answer this one for you.

Hey Dave! this bothers me as i feel my car takes longer to spool up.
I feel with not having a closed box i'm losing air and pressure.

Check if they have different part numbers for the intake. If only one part number then it would suggest a mistake.

I think someone installed aftermarket "block off plates" Anyone familiar with the e60 m5 who did an RPI mods will see this looks almost identical. The hole is there stock

From Evan at Tischer here are the parts. Don't see 2 different intake boxes.

I think you have a faulty box.

on a Turbo motor, I do not thing that you are loosing anything on the dirty side of the filter. You are not loosing any pressure because the pressure is built up after the turbo and not in the air box. The only think I could possible see this having effect on is pulling warmer air in from the engine compartment into the car instead of air outside the engine bay. The e90 M3 has a total of three intake holes for its intake(ram air in lower bumper, air inlet in front of radiator and open hood vent and this is a NA motor where one would think a pressurized intake would be beneficial.

Funny, I got a text message from a tuner friend of mine yesterday showing the same exact thing. He thinks they may have dropped the ball on one of the intakes. They closed it up and said it made a world of difference in driveability.

Have not checked mine yet...

This is appalling if it is production variability. You would think BMW could deliver a consistent product.

I'm hoping the block off plate is aftermarket like munit says. Also it is interesting that it raises performance. Would be good to verify this. Could be an easy mod for all of us.

Wondering if this is indeed the intended design? Can anyone confirm if the Gruppe boxes are the same?

Mine had open holes.... It does not effect performance negatively as air goes in there not out.... Sucking from a fully sealed box would create a vacuum/restriction.

The gruppe M intake is fully open, and it flows more then stock and spools quicker.

Aloha

Heres a pic of both of mine

Looks like a hole to lower pressure from the intake duct......Why would they produce it with a hole if they don't want a hole there?

Aloha,
Alex

Im gonna have mine checked this weekend when it's in the shop. I feel the same way, mainly when in the day when its hotter out. I have had various results on runs against different cars so this is definitely a concern.

This is my opinion only. My production date was 7/12/12 and was not part of the recall. I believe mine was the first few batches that came in along with member MasterDank.
I have checked with my friends that have taken delivery in the last few months and
they all have the plate..so far 3 different cars.
