It's the drive train that whines. Perfectly normal. This happens unregarding if the car is warm or cold - and my guess is that the sound origins from the drive shaft.

You should drive a GT-R and compare, you'll notice the GT-R is a whiny son of a b****.

You all. If you have tune with cold start remove no whining but cold start option all m5 whine... Ok not all but 90% for sure. That is absolutely normal.

They are not talking about driveshaft or diff noises, this is a particular whining that only happens during cold start and typically only lasts a few minutes. On mine it is almost completely independent of engine speed, changing slightly as it goes to idle at at a stop.

Yes the drivetrain makes a whine, it is even mentioned in the owners manual. That isn’t the sound at issue here.

Makes sense. Is there any TSB for it, or is it just considered normal?

I was told normal by BMW dealer. If you turn while moving slowly you will notice it gets a little louder.

Okay, so mine was diagnosed (twice) as the alternator and after harping about it BMw 🇬🇧 has agreed to replace it as a gesture.
After reading your posts, I just hope it is the alternator. I am v sure it is....many cars, even the not so powerful cars make the same sound....part ordered from Germany. Once replaced will update y’all....

@TLK not sure what TSB means other than Lloyds...lol
They kept saying it’s normal but I insisted I wanted it replaced....in the end they compared it to another M5 and agreed mine was louder so Dan at customer services signed it off. I’m sort of thankful but it was my right !

@TheHouseOne....how many times do we hear “it’s normal”. That’s typically the first response unfortunately. Perseverance helps...or helped me to say the least

I'm familiar with alternator noise, such as when failing, or just noisy when the battery charge has dropped from not driving for a while, but that usually more closely tracks engine speed as I remember. So this may be a way to differentiate your cars's particular whine to be either alternator or steering pump.

My old 13 whined which I thought was abnormal and was concerned. It whined the entire time I had it. My other 13 also whines just as much if not maybe a tad bit more.

Differential noise is usually pretty easy to pinpoint versus the noise I think many in here are complaining about. Still good reference for people hunting for reasons their car is making noise, especially if they don't know what end of the car it's coming from.

trying to figure out if this is normal or not. it does it when it’s cold and warm, and changes/gets louder with pedal input. sounds like it’s toward the front of the engine

Not much to go on but could be alternator pulley bearing at a guess, so what's the mileage of car.
