Dave,
I would hold out for Watkins Glen. Lime Rock is smaller, lots of technical components to it. Watkins Glen is a long track (3.1 miles?), and the M5 really excels at this track because of the long straights and is perfect for your straight-piped car to scream at WOT. Everyone at the HPDE said that WG is by far their favorite track in the east. Last year I was the only one with an F10 M5 up there. it would be crazy if a bunch of us showed up this year.

Well gents, no Lime Rock for me anytime in the near future. They have a db limit of 87db at the edge of the track. The last time I tested my straightpipes for sound level while just sitting still, I was at 109db. LOL! There's no way I'm taking my M5 on the track without straightpipe goodness.
I don't think there's a db limit for Watkins Glen. Gotta double check.

We could put the M5 on an extreme diet...

My son gets his license at the end of this month (hopefully). He and I are scheduled to take the Skip Barber one day driving school on April 28th. This will be my fifth or trip up to Lime Rock. Nice place and they have a nice Inn nearby (Interlocken) which is where we stay.

I'm thinking about purchasing the competition package springs and dampers. Has anyone been able to obtain the part numbers and/or done the upgrade?
Do you guys think just the Dinan front and rear swaybars will make a big difference? |

http://f10.m5post.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1392321658 I like that the Dinan bars are hollow to save weight, but for the price might not be worth the extra expense over the BMW CP bars. I also question the adjustability factor of the Dinan bars. To my thinking the change in stiffness is done through the lengthening or shortening of the lever arm, and the adjustment holes pictured on the Dinan bars don't change that arm distance much. But, I suppose an 18% range of adjustment isn't a whole lot anyway. |

I had my oil changed before I went offshore last week (my dime). I didn't want to wait til the scheduled free service. I also had a 4 wheel alignment done. Their key reader stated my brakes needed changing, but when the tech measured the distance, the key reader was wrong so they had to recalibrate it for accuracy. I'm glad I had asked the tech to take a measurement with me watching. If it were not with in spec, they would have charged me since my service light had not went off for service. That's how these bastards get us. I think I'm at 22.5k but it would have been nice for fresh new pads, especially since I only drive the posted speed limit.

I drive very hard and I wouldn't go thru 3 rotors in 14k miles. Do you lease the car to a race track for free training?

Lol...nah man. No track time. I drive the car adequately for its purpose but I guess it's from the occasional 100+ hard braking.

Dealership replaced my pads free of charge a few weeks ago because of squeeking. This was at about 7000 miles, but apparently the new pads they are installing are more resistant to squeeking. I've had no problems since service and plenty of appreciation for my dealer doing me a solid on replacement.

After looking into it more, I think I'm just going to hold off on doing upgraded brake pads for the immediate and probably foreseeable future. Some of you had a good point, in that why spend money if you don't have to.
I'm not 100% sure if the BMW ///M Performance School uses stock brake pads in their M5's and M6's, but I know what the steel brakes on an M5 and M6 can do because of my time at the 2-Day driving school and my personal experience at the track. I personally believe that much of the brake fade issues come from the brake fluid that BMW puts in the M5 and the rest comes from the material of the brake pad itself. I don't think BMW will put in a brake pad that is more resistant to fade because it would probably cause more dust and more squeaking when driven on the street, which 99% of F10 M5 owners primarily do. So it's really the 1% of F10 M5 owners who track more than twice a year that could really benefit from a better brake pad. Now I'm thinking I might get an extended maintenance plan when my 50,000 miles are up, just so I won't have to spend $3,000 grand on new pads and rotors. I dunno. What do you all think? Oh by the way I was looking at possibly upgrading to CCB's one day. Looks like cost per rotor for the CCB's is somewhere between $3,000 - $4,000 PER ROTOR!!! Insanium!

Yep! Mine is in for rears after 24,000 km in 14 months, my dealer has never needed to replace M5 pads, and didn't even have them in stock!
The service guy aways has a quiet laugh - the vast majority of these car tootle around driven by very conservative folks...
